The plates are very close up and detailed of what is left of the sculptures. There are some plates in color but most are fittingly in black and white, which may be best. These pictures allow detailed study of the work with close up multiple perspective shots that come close to enabling a three D sense of what the pieces look like now. There is a brief but interesting narrative to start and a summary of the sources used at the end. It is a heavy book.

Its sculptures are greatly admired today. Here we take a closer look at why the building was so famous, and why these iconic works mark a key moment in the global history of art. John Bailey (1750–1819), View of the Parthenon from the Propylea. Hand-coloured aquatint after Edward Dodwell, 1819. British Museum 11 January 2018. The Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens was built between 447 and 438 BC as a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena Parthenos. The word parthénos (παρθένος) meant ‘maiden, girl’ or ‘virgin, unmarried woman’. A reconstruction of how the Acropolis may have looked in ancient times, including the Parthenon. Illustration by Kate Morton.
This book is a beautiful photographic study of the sculptures of the Parthenon. Created by Boardman, whose numerous works include Greek Sculpture: the Archaic Period (1978), and Finn, distinguished fine arts photographer, it should appeal to all admirers of classical sculpture. About 230 ng full-page color and black-and-white photographsreveal the beauty of the works that are largely regarded as the most influential in the history of Western sculpture.
