A parish church in the Church of England is the church which acts as the religious centre for the people within the smallest and most basic Church of England administrative region, the parish – since the 19th century called the ecclesiastical parish (outside meetings of the church) to avoid confusion with the civil parish which many towns and villages have.

  • A rare find - a dictionary of all the words architects and clergy use to describe the parts of a church. There's a lot here that I've never found elsewhere.

The book does have a strong Anglican bent as the title would indicate - The definition of "Churchyard Crosses" goes on for pages, while the definition of Menorah says "See Candelabrum" (where Candelabrum's definition is all of two sentences). This isn't a serious fault - it just gave me a good chuckle.

This is a practical dictionary - there are plenty of useful definitions but there is very little etymology and often no indication of how a word came to be used as it is in the parish.

  • This is a wonderful book that defines hundreds of ecclesiastical-related terms. I would not hesitate to recommend it to others!
