The Big Book Of Lofts.

ABC
  • A huge book of contemporary house photos, all in color and representing the work of eighty-six architectural practices mostly in Europe, Australia and North America (twenty-eight). The 1300 photos are divided into four chapters: urban, country, isolated and unique, with each house getting between seven and twelve pictures and frequently floor plans.

The chapter on unique houses I found the most interesting, the eighteen shown give as much variation as possible to the word: home. The Pixel house in South Korea with its curved brick wall looking like a blown up computer image or the Ehrlich residence in California with ceiling to floor windows pulling the exterior inside. Weirdest might be the Villa Man-bow in Japan looking like a ball and probably inspired by Chesa Futura in St Moritz, Switzerland. Unfortunately the text to all the houses in the book is minimal, a paragraph about location and rooms and then very short captions to a few of the photos.

Overall I was disappointed by the book. The bulky size, it weighs twelve pounds, means it is awkward to look through. The color throughout has a sort of grey/blue cast which is strangely in keeping with so many of the houses. Most have huge empty interiors of near white material and for houses that are lived in an almost total absence of any wall decoration or colored furniture. The owners practice minimalism to the extreme it seems to me. Much better I think is Home: New Directions in World Architecture and Design, with some duplication but better photo reproduction, far more detailed text and captions and probably a more comprehensive coverage of modern houses around the world.

  • The book is good. It cointains some very interesting houses from around the world. You get a sense of how the house building has evolved over the dacedes and who leads the world with their cuting edge architectural ideas. You begin to get ideas of your own and you feel as if you wanna start building your own house as soon as you are capable.

  • Excellent hardcover & paper, great photo quality & printing, impressive finishing details. All the text is in 4 different languages, the plan details are welcomed anytime and combined with the pictures provide an excellent in mind view of the actual house being pictured.
Looking forward for more books from this publisher/author.
