Mark Manders (born 1968) is a Dutch artist. He first studied graphic design; but, then changed his mind and decided to be a writer but with objects instead of words. Therein he became very interested in the paralleled evolution of humans and objects. Typical of his work is the arrangement of random objects, such as tables, chairs, light bulbs, blankets and dead animals.

Dutch artist, Mark Manders' first UK solo exhibition takes the form of an ambitious new commission for BALTIC. Short Sad Thoughts" showcases work from Manders' ongoing exploration Self-Portrait as a Building, a project the artist has been working on since he was 18 years old.

On the one hand there is an emphasis on architectural structures, found books and magazines, glass vitrines of natural history museums and endless repetitions of model cities.
