For anyone interested in collecting mourning trinkets(jewelry, photos, cards etc)or learning more about the various mourning customs of the Victorian Era then this is the book for them.

Every aspect of mourning is covered in this book. From how to prepare a person's home for a funeral, what to wear while in morning, and how to remember loved ones.

The photographs(color and black and white) are amazing. Each has a little blurb next to it describing what the item is. In addition the author gives definitions of popular materials used during the Victorian Era. For instance, she explains what French Jet, cannetille, bloodstone etc. are. There is also a section that explains what flowers, stones and symbols meant to the Victorians. In addition, different types of photographs are also mentioned in this book.

While I loved this book and am glad I bought it, I was somewhat bothered that Ms. Brett repeats herself frequently. A perfect example is one more than one occasion(and sometimes on the same page) she tells the reader that a white rose symbolized a child or pure young adult. Also I noticed that the blurbs by the photos often repeat what Ms. Brett has already written in the main text.

Still, despite the small shortcoming the book is amazing and taught me a lot of things that I did not know about the era. I highly recommend this book.

Ordered this book looking for some insight into the mourning customs during the 1860 era. This book has many good photos and is nicely arranged. I did find it somewhat annoying that many of the paragraphs were repeated over several times. About ten pages into the reading I began to get the feeling that the author had a page quota and she was struggling to meet it. There are several photos which are incorrectly captioned, one of a clearly deceased young girl (you can see quite readily the stand holding the body upright) in which she is identified as living. It was these small details, that when compiled, make me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the book. Again, it seemed that the page quota might have gotten the best of the author as the back of the book is devoted to a 'cut and paste' compilation of the most basic ink drawings of jewelry, etc. which is contained in just about every civil war publication on the subject. This is a nice book, but I would recommend checking it out at your public library before you purchase it to make certain that you can live with the flaws.

This book gives interesting information on the different aspects of mourning customs during the Victorian era. Explanations & examples are given for the customs in clothing, jewelry, photos, etc. The only problem I have with the book is that there are many spelling errors in it. I wonder who the proofreader was.

A informative and interesting book on mourning practice's.
Mostly based on American mourning history, 'Fashionable Mourning Jewellery, Clothing and Customs' and in addition to N Llewellyn's 'The Art of Death' ( a most British history of morning practice's) complete a comprehensive and detailed research into the phenomenon of fine art objects used as Memento Mori.

This book is a great resource for all things affiliated with Victorian mourning! It is also a beautiful book with wonderful pictures.

I'm super excited I got this book and havent put it down since. I recommend anyone this book who is looking deeper into the Victorian Mourning Customs.

This book was one of the best I've ever read on this subject matter. Many questions I had in my mind were answered, although one in particular, was not as it didn't seem to be included in the book. However over all, I'd recommend this book highly to anyone interested in learning about mourning customs in the Victorian era as it taught me many NEW things that I had not been aware of.
