Award-winning aviation journalist Geza Szurovy has had a life-long love affair with airplanes and he’s even a pilot himself. And because he thinks about the world and the place of everything in it, he connects some interesting dots. From the travel poster designer’s point of view all the artwork has to do is just that: connect dots on a map in an emblematic manner. They are sourced from museums and airline archives (Air France is the largest such, with over 350 posters), individual collectors, and of course the author’s own collection.

According to the book Art of the Airways by Geza Szurovy, though airline poster art can be traced back to 1914 and the very first airline, the 1950s saw the form reach its peak just as aviation became a mature industry. Notably, posters from that period and later tended to focus not so much on the plane itself as where it could get you. " allure of exotic destinations was a strong draw from the beginning," Szurovy writes, "and as airline safety improved and speed was taken for granted the destination became the dominant theme.

  • I first purchased this book when I worked for the manager of a small airport and was learning more about aviation and planes than I'd ever known before. The cover photo first attracted my attention because of its vivid color and exotic subject. The complete volume reproduced advertising and travelogue material from many of the great luxury travel routes of an earlier age -- when air travel was slower but was also more "special" for those who could afford it. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased a second book for a relative who marks cocktail hour at his Honolulu home by the passing flight of a small plane headed to another of the islands, etched against sunset or clouds, stimulating the imagination and instilling wanderlust. This book lives on my coffee table and probably always will.

  • Beautiful book, great condition

  • A beautiful book, fond memories .

  • Nice book. I wish it were a touch larger so the photos would be bigger

  • The commercial art work used for calendars and advertisements varies from the fairly ordinary to gorgeous vistas. Much of the artwork is nostalgic, recreating the atmosphere of the 30s and 40s. Some good memories...

  • Gorgeous book. Makes me nostalgic for the good-old-days I missed out on.

  • A beautiful book with big reproductions of historic airline posters as well as fascinating historical information. Great coffee table book for the world traveler.

  • Brilliantly recalls romantic era of commercial aviation when graceful service was king. Text is informative and well-written, art is well-chosen and striking.
