Book 18 of 18 in the Spectrum Series.

Book 18 of 18 in the Spectrum Series. I own many of the 18 Spectrum books (one put out each year) and find myself returning to them over and over to look at all the incredible art. There is an introduction and a few features in the beginning of each book but the images reign supreme. There are also sections in each book devoted to sculptures (in mediums of all kinds) that fit the categories above.

Art books, art products. Volume 18 is another great addition to the series. Binding is great for a book this thick. There are close to 500 pieces of art from different type of publications and purposes. Also included are some unpublished ones. At the back of the book is a blurb to the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live happening on 18-20 May 2012. It's a fantasy-focused art fair where there will be workshops and sales.

Challenging, controversial, educational, and irreverent, the award-winning Spectrum series reinforces both the importance and prevalence of fantastic art in today’s culture. With exceptional images by extraordinary creators, this elegant full-color collection showcases an international cadre of creators working in every style and medium, both traditional and digital. The best artists from the United States, Europe, China, Australia, South America and beyond have gathered into the only annual devoted exclusively to works of fantasy, horror, science fiction, and the surreal, making Spectrum one of the year’s highly most anticipated books.Featured in SPECTRUM 18 are 300 diverse visionaries, many of them world-renowned, including Michael Whelan, Sam Weber, Donato Giancola, Leo & Diane Dillon, Kinuko Craft, James Gurney, Peter de Sève. With art from books, graphic novels, video games, films, galleries, and advertising, Spectrum is both an electrifying art book for fans and an invaluable resource for clients looking for bright new talent. The entire field is discussed in an invaluable, found-nowhere-else Year In Review. Contact information for each artist is included in a handy index.Often imitated, never equaled, SPECTRUM 18 continues the freshness and excellence that was established seventeen years ago.
  • If you're into seeing current fantasy, surreal, (dark) and/or science-fiction art this series is a must have.

I own many of the 18 Spectrum books (one put out each year) and find myself returning to them over and over to look at all the incredible art.

There is an introduction and a few features in the beginning of each book but the images reign supreme.

Other than a credit and brief description of the image (artist, medium, client etc) it is simply page upon page of jaw dropping digital and traditional paintings (and a few photo-manipulations).

There are also sections in each book devoted to sculptures (in mediums of all kinds) that fit the categories above.

The only downside is that some of the images need to be printed fairly small, so I keep a magnifying glass handy if I really want to do some study.

If you have the $$...you'll probably want to start adding these books to your collection.

  • I have been purchasing the Spectrum books for several years now, and I have yet to be disappointed with this spectacular series. The range of styles is sure to stimulate the imagination. I do wish that more space could be devoted to some of the individual works so I could savor the details but that would result in a very unwieldy book, so it isn't a serious complaint.

The books are a must-have for anyone interested in the visual side of the fantasy and science fiction genres, or those who simply enjoy art that engages the brain as well as the eyes. This volume is no exception and is highly recommended.

  • I love this book! normally with spectrum books there only 10 or so pages of art that I really like, and then there is some art that seems repeated or it is just not as special to me, but in spectrum 18 you can find a lot of really good art, page after page we were shocked and very inspired by what we were looking at. Really happy with my purchase!

  • Compilations like this allow artists to see what others in a genre are doing. This book is a source of wonderful ideas.

  • Not sure what the rest of you think but this book just gets better and better with every volume. The inspiration one gets as an artist or gazer is very strong. They choose the best of the best to appear in these books. Hopefully one day I will be among those elite (...he says while his fingers are crossed) :-)

  • Nothing can beat Spectrum for well made pages and cover, let alone all the different artists,

  • If you love art and fantasy this is the book for you. I've been collecting it since Spectrum 8 and every book has been a great inspiration. It's nice to see how certain artist develop and it's even nicer to see the caliber of artistic talent out there. I'm very impressed and will purchase future editions for sure.

  • This was given as a gift to a friend and he absolutely loves it.
