’Corot in Italy: Open-Air Painting and the Classical-Landscape Tradition’’. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1991.

’Corot in Italy: Open-Air Painting and the Classical-Landscape Tradition’’. Paris: Éditions Gallimard, 1991. Munich: Hirmer Verlag, 1991.

Excellent book for anyone interested in the history and art of landscape painting. I can't praise this book enough. Corot's work in Italy are in my mind some of the greatest plein air painting ever done. Seeing his work compared to his contemporaries etc. is very interesting. Lots of colour, as well as black and white reference plates. The book arrived in good condition. One person found this helpful. One also appreciates the allure of the Italian landscape. Corot is sometimes viewed as the father of Impressionism(his later work). But I could look at these landscapes all day.

Arriving in Rome in 1825, Corot spent three years painting and drawing the landscape nearby. In their freshness and candour, his open-air studies seem to point forward, toward Impressionism. Galassi shows that they also point to the past. Half a century before Corot visited Italy, the community of foreign artists at Rome had spawned a school of outdoor painting.

Galassi's book investigates in absorbing depth the international artistic community in Rome, and the traditions of open-air painting which had grown up among those artists through more than five decades. -Stephen Jones, Country Life. A stimulating and thorough study that embraces far more than just Corot. "Galassi's argument is extremely convincing and forces the reader both to reconsider Corot and the originality of Impressionism. Beautifully produced. Galassi has assembled a formidable range of facts and new insights for this detailed examination of Corot's first, and most important, visit to Italy in 1825-8.

Under the banner of Neoclassicism, an international roster of artists - British, French, German, Scandinavian - elaborated the experiment into a rich tradition, absorbing the lessons of Poussin and Claude and appropriating the motifs of the viewmakers. Corot's work marks the culmination of the tradition, the last, flowering of the classical landscape ideal. Drawing on the efforts of scholars, dealers, and collectors, Galassi establishes the coherence and significance of early outdoor painting in Italy. Building on this foundation, he explores in depth Corot's magnificent landscapes.

  • I can't praise this book enough. Corot's work in Italy are in my mind some of the greatest plein air painting ever done.Seeing his work compared to his contemporaries etc. is very interesting. One also appreciates the allure of the Italian landscape. Corot is sometimes viewed as the father of Impressionism(his later work). But I could look at these landscapes all day. His realism and fresh painting technique is really sumptuous, and it's a good thing he found his niche in painting rather late.Buy this book, you won't regret it if you love landscape.
