Georges Braque is one of the best-known and least-understood artists of our century.

Georges Braque is one of the best-known and least-understood artists of our century. From his friends' affectionate recollections. Although French painter Georges Braque (1882-1963) was highly respected and financially successful during his lifetime, his individuality and inventiveness have often been overshadowed by the even greater genius of Picasso, his collaborator in the development of cubism. In her succinct and illuminating text, Wilkin (Stuart Davis) traces Braque's career, beginning with his fauve period and his interest in Cezanne. She conveys a clear understanding of his style and technique, and demonstrates his integral role in the cubist experiment.

Georges Braque (/brɑːk/; French: ; 13 May 1882 – 31 August 1963) was a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His most important contributions to the history of art were in his alliance with Fauvism from 1905, and the role he played in the development of Cubism. Braque's work between 1908 and 1912 is closely associated with that of his colleague Pablo Picasso

  • Book is great but it condition is not equal that price.

  • Can be used for study, development of cubism, reference or just enjoyment. Very fulfilling and wonderful color pages. My favorite of all cubists for continuing to improve and experiment when others jumped ship for a new field.

  • Illustrations were adequate, bio was basic, text was dated, predictable and added nothing to the critical overview of Braque's work.

  • I never really realized the colors that Braque used until I bought this book. I had always thought of him like Picasso's little brother and just another cubist. Finding out that he moved to L'estaque (early 1900s) and basically took Cezanne's images of that former sleepy little village near Marseilles nd blasting it with fauve colors was a sight to behold. It actually made me much more appreciative of Cezanne's landscapes after reading this book. So, do yourself a favor and see what a true painting wizard can do. Well worth the ride with nary a bump..sgu

  • This book was exactly what I needed. I recently came into possession of a print of one of his paintings from 1926 and it made me want to know more about the artist. I was pleased with the book and am still enjoying it. I was especially interested in his association with Picasso. I'm glad to have received the book through Amazon and the illustrations are awesome!

  • I like his work and therefore enjoyed reading the book. I am an professional artist myself and continue to study the masters.

  • Lovely book, lots of great material - both pictures and text.

  • I would have enjoyed it more if she had included some of his personal life. I wanted to know about the artist, too.
