The writings which compose Paul Klee’s theory of form production and pictorial form have the same importance and the same meaning for modern art . This book is the first full collection of Paul Klee’s ideas on form and artistic creation.

The writings which compose Paul Klee’s theory of form production and pictorial form have the same importance and the same meaning for modern art as had Leonardo’s writings which composed his theory of painting for Renaissance art. Like the latter, they do not constitute a true and proper treatise, that is to say, a collection of stylistic and technical rules, but are the result of an introspective analysis which the artist engages in during his work and in the light of the experience of reality which comes to him in the course of his work.

Eric Shanes is a professional painter, independent art historian, and lecturer. He is a leading expert on Turner, a vice president of the Turner Society, and the author of many books on the artist. Books by Eric Shanes. Mor. rivia About Paul Klee.

  • Beautiful text! I note another reviewer's worry about a few missing pieces, but Klee produced so many paintings that this is inevitable in any text. I make up for this by buying several books on Klee (I have 6). One of the real strengths of this book is the detailed information on each reproduction. The author lists the dimensions, media and methods (gluing paper onto board, cloth on to board, etc). The addition of Klee's writing greatly informs what we are looking at. The color reproductions are excellent and the size format of the book works very well, particularly given the small size of many of Klee's originals.

A very fine purchase that will give pleasure for years.

  • I enjoyed this book inmensely. Not just because Klee is one of my favorite artists of all times, but also because of the beautiful illustrations that are in the book. Quite faithful reproductions they are. The text, though, is somewhat technical and specialized but it provides important information about the author's outlook and philosophy.

  • A beautiful book on Paul Klee -- it's amazingly good in the Kindle iPad version, especially on an iPad Pro. What sublime images!

  • I like this a lot, many of the beautiful reproduction I haven't seen and I also enjoy Klee journals.

  • If you want a biography of Paul Klee this book seems to have that and more besides. I am enjoying the illustrations of his paintings on my Kindle as I can enlarge them to examine details.

  • Good book with high quality printing. I love it very much.

  • Beautifully displayed artwork

  • Beautiful large format book.
