Elizabeth-Louise Vigée-Lebrun (1755-1842) was a prolific French portrait painter to royalty and the rich and famous. She was highly successful from an early age, and her portraits became desirable when she was still in her teens. By the time she was in her twenties she was painting portraits for Queen Marie-Antoinette. The book is a quick read that's light on facts and gives a general overview of her life. In that way it seems very much like a true autobiography, where at no point you question how could one remember so much detail and it does not feel fake.

  • After struggling with a very poor translation of the "abridged" version of these memoirs, I found this volume and was very impressed. This artist is a fascinating character and her life is very colorful. A great read. Just be sure to buy this version, or any other non-abridged version. The disappointing translation was "Memoirs of Madame Vigee-Lebrun" illustrated edition by Dodo Press, translation by Lionel Strachey. I've given a detailed review of that with some examples from this book for comparison.

  • I read the 1903 edition of Vigee-LeBrun's memoirs (translated by Lionel Strachey), and had no idea how much had been left out. If you're interested in Vigee-LeBrun, this is the book to get! (Too bad it's out of print!) Her life was fascinating, and she tells it best. Travel with her from Revolutionary France to the court of Catherine the Great. Evans' translation is very fluid. Don't miss the "pen portraits" at the back of the book--they describe the artist's famous friends and acquaintances, such as Jacques-Louis David and Benjamin Franklin.

  • This is a facinating autobiography. You get a good sense of the times and the horrors of the French revolution. I read it on line, but I hope to find it on paper, also.
