The Rolling Stones, commonly referred to as the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band, epitomize everything that’s excessive, lavish, exciting and powerful about rock music. Straight from Wyman’s huge personal archive, Rolling With The Stones features previously unreleased letters, photographs, memorabilia and personal journals.

Wyman (Stone Alone ), the bass player for the Rolling Stones, is also their personal chronicler; he has kept a diary since the band's formation in 1962 and has amassed a spectacular collection of artifacts and memorabilia, which he includes here in this lush, attractive coffee-table book. Formed by Brian Jones, the Rolling Stones came out of the British skiffle and rhythm-and-blues scene. He has written several books, including Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey, Stone Alone: The Story of a Rock and Roll Band and Wyman Shoots Chagall. In addition to playing with the Stones, he has released solo recordings and formed a new band called Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings.

Since Bill Wyman left the Rolling Stones in 1991, the bassist has released several books . Wyman spoke to Rolling Stone about the new book, his many other artistic and scientific interests and why reuniting with the Stones in December in London wasn’t much fun.

Since Bill Wyman left the Rolling Stones in 1991, the bassist has released several books, devoted time to his London burger-and-steak joint Sticky Fingers, held photo exhibitions, toured and released new music with his band the Rhythm Kings and even patented his own metal detector. I’ve always been very fortunate that, whenever I put my hand to something, something amazing happens, Wyman tells Rolling Stone.

Bill Wyman reveals that he was his own band's biggest fan in his glorified scrapbook, Rolling with the Stones. to the Stones almost 40 years later. Jagger's camp sexuality and Richards's wasted elegance reached their apogee in the late Sixties and early Seventies, making the group the most 'dangerous' rock group of their time and creating a template for a certain kind of louche, self-destructive imagery and behaviour that still underpins what passes for rock rebellion these days. For anyone who ever wondered what Bill Wyman was doing while his cohorts discovered hard drugs, occultism and, in Jagger's case, cosying up to the establishment, this book answers the question.

Bill Wyman (born William George Perks J. 24 October 1936) is an English musician, record producer, songwriter and singer. Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman has been diagnosed with prostate cancer "Playing with the Stones there was always such a lot of pressure," he told the Telegraph in 2008.

Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. A spokesman for the musician said: "He is undergoing treatment and is expected to make a full recovery as it was caught in the early stages. Born William Perks in Lewisham, London, the star was a member of the Stones from 1962 until 1993. Since then, he has recorded and toured with his own band, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. Playing with the Stones there was always such a lot of pressure," he told the Telegraph in 2008. The next album or single always had to be the best, or at least sell more. When we got together to play it was a great moment.

The longtime bass player for the Rolling Stones combines firsthand reminiscences with personal memorabilia to provide an insider's look at four decades or rock 'n' roll history.
  • if you are a hard core stones fan and you don't own this book, get it- quickly!! it's a treasure chest of stones memorabilia, from the very beginning, and from various countries. need a gift for a stones fan? can't miss with this. it's a tome, a very heavy book, beautifully done. there are used copies available, i bought one, saved quite a bit. it's the best book I've seen of stones memorabilia, and, of course, you know it's all real, coming right out of boxes in bill wyman's house. this guy saved it all, good thing, too. hard to tear oneself away from looking through it. easily the most fascinating visual stones history book- with guaranteed real history. highly recommended, from a stones fan of 54 years.

  • Bill Wyman's book about the Rolling Stones is a superior effort. The book is similar in layout to the Beatles Anthology or the 'According to the Stones' book which followed Wyman's and was written by the remaining members of the group. Here are the reasons I believe this is the best Stones picture history on the market.

    1. Wyman has attempted to be fair to all members, past and present. His treatment of Brian Jones is sympathetic without pulling punches. He acknowledges Jones as the founder and driving force behind the band, and he laments his loss.

    2. Wyman has a prodigious collection of Stones ephemera, which he began saving almost from day one, so that he could show his kids that he had been in a rock and roll band for the two or three years he expected the ride to last. There are literally hundreds of color photos of Stones stuff in this book. It's like going back in time or going to the world's best Rolling Stones museum. And it is put together with love and fits Wyman's narrative perfectly. Wyman also has a lot of items dealing with other bands from the period that traveled with them, influenced them, or just existed at the same time and are of interest to the history of rock and roll.

    3. The writing is superb. There is very little "I" in this book. Wyman has carefully made it a history of the band, rarely mentioning his own personal experiences except where they are historically significant. This modesty is refreshing and makes the book more credible than 'According to the Rolling Stones'.

    4. The book is well-thought-out and well put together. It is a delight to read from cover to cover and will be a book you will return to and re-read to find out more about the background and historical context of the songs. It is also very reasonably priced. I got mine from Amazon used for around five dollars and it was the best five bucks I've spent in a long time on a book.

Buy it, treasure it. And thank you, Bill, for giving readers such a fun and informative look inside the life of one of the world's greatest rock and roll bands.

  • I am the Stones Authority. This is a super cool book. And kind of hard to get a hold of now for a reasonable price. Some people complain about the format of the book because it is not a story book. Insert eye rolling here. Some of us actually appreciate an archivist type approach to some things since there are more than enough story books out about the Stones at this point. And Bill already gave us his story book version in "Stone Alone". But the memorabilia, the workaday notes, the photos and all make this such a fun collection to peruse at one's leisure that you should add it to your collection forthwith. Encyclopedic in its girth and volume there is no other that compares or can replace it.

  • If you love the Stones you have to have this. Yes it is Bill Wyman not "the Rolling Stones". Great deal if you buy it used. I payed $10 with the shipping for a 500 page coffee table book! Con: You will see why Bill Wyman is not with the Stones anymore. If you are a Mick Jagger fan. This is not for you. I think he really bashes Jagger unfairly. Lots of rare pictures and stories.

  • This book is very heavy and that's because it's filled with a HUGE amount of great stuff. There are tons of photos & wonderful ephemera, plus the written material is quite informative and thorough (also very interesting).

  • there are a lot of books on the rolling stones but this issue is the best so far for me. written by non other than ex-rolling stone bill wyman himself who surprised me with his gift of writing and archiving. the book is well formatted and well laid out visually which is typical of any DK publishing. the book is comprehensive in terms of history and packed with a lot of photos that even the library of congress cannot even supply. i do not know how bill wyman has amassed a ton of archival photos which was amazing. even the anthology book published by the stones themselves is inferior to this edition by bill wyman. great job for a top notch artistic grade rolling stones book.

  • I love the Stones, I love Bill, I love his writing, but this book needed a better designer. Yes, I like it - but I had to read it with a magnifying glass, and the layout is not well done. A book should not get in the way of its text and photos.

  • Bill Wyman apparently kept a detailed diary and took lots of photos during his career with the Rolling Stones. This is a coffee table book that any rock and roll history fiend will devour. I love the personal feeling of it. It's like being in Bill's family room and looking through his old boxes of band posters, gig handbills, candid photos and postcards. It's a treasure trove that you don't have to be a Rolling Stones fan to enjoy. It's full of personal stories and details.
