This book gives a good understanding of the people, times and attitudes surrounding the music of the delta. The author unfortunately uses too many words which would dazzle an English Master in describing some of these musical interludes. Most if us are not musically trained so many of his phrases meant nothing to me. Having said that, I did find it a good read about a subject I have fallen in love with. I learned a lot about the Delta, the artists and their attitudes, and how America, because of its ongoing bias, nearly lost one of its most valuable treasures.

There is no question: If you love the blues, or any music, that is, Ted Gioia’s utterly fascinating work, Delta Blues, will leave you with an immense appreciation for an essential era of American musical and cultural history. It's a phenomenal subject to tackle.

“The essential history of this distinctly American genre.”―Atlanta Journal-Constitution

In this “expertly researched, elegantly written, dispassionate yet thoughtful history” (Gary Giddins), award-winning author Ted Gioia gives us “the rare combination of a tome that is both deeply informative and enjoyable to read” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). From the field hollers of nineteenth-century plantations to Muddy Waters and B.B. King, Delta Blues delves into the uneasy mix of race and money at the point where traditional music became commercial and bluesmen found new audiences of thousands. Combining extensive fieldwork, archival research, interviews with living musicians, and first-person accounts with “his own calm, argument-closing incantations to draw a line through a century of Delta blues” (New York Times), this engrossing narrative is flavored with insightful and vivid musical descriptions that ensure “an understanding of not only the musicians, but the music itself” (Boston Sunday Globe). Rooted in the thick-as-tar Delta soil, Delta Blues is already “a contemporary classic in its field” (Jazz Review). 38 illustrations
  • Excellent

  • There have been many blues books published over the years focussing on individual blues styles and artists. However, there isn't a single source that traces the entire arc of the Delta Blues from it's absolute origins at the turn of the century, through the era of the classic "blues singers" of the 20's and 30's...all the way through the great Chicago Blues heroes (with delta roots). This book does an excellent job of just that. This book runs in chronoligical order tracing the history of the blues with chapters dedicated to each "era" of the blues, with emphasis on a particular artists that personified that era. So we've got chapters that focus on (Charley Patton, Skip James, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King...etc). As a bonus, each chapter not only focuses on the primary artist, but the artistis in their "orbits" as well...so the Charley Patton chapter talks about Son House and Willie Brown...the Muddy chapter talks about Jimmie Rogers and Little Walter...etc....The net result of this approach is a sort of "Greatist Hits" of blues books...you literally get snapshots of all the history/anecdoes that have been populated in various sources over the last 50 years...all in one place...making this the perfect place to start your blues history lesson.

  • I have read a few books about blues history, and I have watched a lot of documentaries. This book is just THE BEST, is awesome. I used it to planning a trip in search of the blues roots, from New Orleans to Chicago. The trip was as if I have been there before.

The narrative envelops you in a layer of passion, but his objectivity is dispassionate as must to be in a great historian.

Now I'm reading his book about Jazz history.

  • This book is an excellent review of the Delta Blues, enjoyable for those long experienced with the music as well as for someone new (and open to) the genre. It is not a comprehensive piece, and restricts coverage primarily to guitarists-singers, with light reference to piano and music based on other instruments. I found it a page turner, but I am admittedly predisposed to the subject matter (both the music and the geographic area). You can spend a life time learning about and enjoying the blues. Here's some very good exposure to it in a couple of hours.

  • Well written and very informative. Ted gives some thoughtful incites as well as facts and discusses what it fact and what is speculation. Great history of the Blues.

  • I chose this rating because I learned a lot about the Blues and how the Mississippi delta shaped the foundation of music. I only knew about Robert Johnson and had tangentially heard about the other Blues artists. I learned more about the major influencers of BB King, Muddy Waters, Tommy Johnson , Skip James and Howlin Wolf on modern music. Great read. Thank you.

  • Gioia writes a poised ,expansive, extremely witty and erudite book on the Delta blues. This book belongs on the shelf of the historian, the blues buff, and the music lover.

Gioia writes with the hand of an historian and the ear of a musician. Much more than a "fan book," Delta Blues places the history of this musical form into its unique context as history, folk art and commercial endeavor. He never bogs down in detail, and manages to keep up a central narrative told across episodes from the history of the Delta blues. Each chapter tells a different story of the Blues, but maintains the momentum of the previous chapter and contributes to the next.

Even if you're not a music lover, read this book!

  • . So much to think about I think ineed to read it at least twice more. This is an awesome gift to share with any blues or music lover. A+++.
