  • "Portraits in Rhythm Study" by Anthony J. Cirone is possibly the best snare drum method book I have used. This version was especially helpful, as each etude in the book was thoroughly described for a correct interpretation. There is something new to learn from each one. All the notation was neat and easy to read. Each passage became more and more of a challenge. Whoever purchases it can build certain kinds of chops from it. My only complaint, however, is the physical structure of the book. I found myself having to bend the book open a little harder than usual to keep it at a certain page. This happens to 90% of method books, but not as badly as this one.

Overall, a fantastic book. Anyone looking to further themselves in the world of snare drum should add this to their collection.

  • Every percussion instructor should be using this when teaching "Portraits in Rhythm" ... especially one that has been teaching for over 15 years.! A must for state competition.!

  • A masterpiece in Percussion Literature.. This book will do more to develop your 'touch' and enhance your rhythmic sophistication than any 10 other books might do. For drummer's looking to become artists in the world of rhythmic expression...this is the book. Having Toni's explanations and suggestions as a guide for each piece is invaluable. A great book, written by a great teacher, musician and a great mentor to many of us in the world of music whom have been fortunate to study with him. Yes i'm partial...but what i say is true! Thank you Toni.

  • I really like the full page of Cirone's interpretations and suggestions for each etude. Very helpful and insightful, I would recommend getting this book instead of just the etude book. The study guide can be a life saver.

  • a present for my teacher

  • This study guide offers exceptional solos for the snare drummer while providing great insight into the interpretation. Mr. Cirone has done a great service by providing not only the solos, but his personal guidance on the technicalities of each piece and related tips for performance. Thank you Mr. Cirone!

  • I really like this book. It's helped me improve my Etude interpretations. In North Carolina, we have this thing called All District Band, and it's a very hard audition to make, competing with a lot of good people(a middle and highschool thing) and all the snare solos from 9-10 and 11-12 are pulled straight from this book, so I think I have a very good chance of making it this year, in 9-10 as a freshman.

  • A standard of percussion study, this method book has really challenged me from day one. The study guide portion offers a great inside view of what Cirone was thinking about as he crafted each etude. Recommended to any serious student of percussion
