Playing Guitar in a Jazz Big Band" is a book I would have liked to have had in high school, when I was playing guitar in the school big band. I had some idea of how I should play, as well as a smattering of chords that were appropriate, but I didn't really understand how big band guitar was done. I was playing all sorts of 5 and 6 string chords, trying to squeeze in all the notes when I should have been playing 3 note chords and emphasizing the rhythm part of rhythm guitar.

Playing Guitar in Jazz Band is for beginning to intermediate guitarists who are interested in playing in a jazz big band. Playing this style of guitar can be challenging, as the chord changes are often complex, yet the guitar parts should remain simple enough to avoid detracting from the overall sound of the band. This book breaks down that process by substituting difficult chord shapes with more flexible voicings that are designed to sound good on the guitar. Learn a wide variety of rhythmic patterns and work with authentic chord charts that are exactly like the.

  • I was not a beginner when I give a look to this book. I played myself in a jazz big band for a few years.
I am not sure this book will be a good start for a beginner.
No CD provided. The content is very basic. Typography is obsolete.
There are far more better book : "Swing and Big Band Guitar: Four-To-The Bar" written by
Charlton Johnson / very detailed and with an excellent CD / for beginners to advanced.
Or for a more modern comping style : "Jazz guitar comping" written by Andrew Green /
    for intermediate to advanced.
    I hope this help.
    Good music everybody !

  • Well, if you don't know (yet) that each fret on the board of your guitar is a half tone apart from the next fret up or down, but you feel eager to be asked soon playing in the bigband of your school, then this booklet seems to be among the few to start with.

For me, playing some years in a jazz combo, well - its not for me.

Sorry for this straight statement, but as a central european (not native english speaker) I'm not in the situation to use all these polite wordings that anglosaxonians are famous for.

This book, like others in the series, is written to be used with volume 54 of the Jamie Abersold play-along CDs and tapes, so you'll want to buy that as well. The book doesn't go into a tremendous amount of detail, and the musical examples are pretty harmonically simple ("All Blues", "Dolphin Dance", etc.) so after working through this book the beginner looking to expand his or her technique in big band guitar playing will want something with more depth and a little more theory. I'd recommend Charlton Johnson's "Swing & Big Band Guitar" as a book for anyone from the advancing beginner to the strong intermediate looking to learn classic swing and rhythm style.
