  • New Concepts for Trumpet: Innovative Etudes, Duets and Studies

My music library includes the four Allen Vizzuti's method books. Although all are well worth the money to buy and time and effort to study, this is my favorite of the bunch. I bought it after playing its duets with a friend; then bought the others. Like in his other books, Vizzuti displays an ingenuity and cleverness of composition that results in a uniqueness from any other trumpet method (I have most of those). Technical studies and etudes galore using note progressions that I've not seen. Although this is NOT a beginner's trumpet study, much of it will be playable, with practice, by the advanced student or better adult volunteer-band player. His 20 duets alone are worth the price -- everything from fairly easy to difficult -- and none that you'll confuse with other duets. Even though Vizzuti has an incredibly high range as a player, this book devotes only 8 of its 160 pages to high-note playing. Actually, most of the book is playable by a trumpeter with a typical range, since it rarely goes even to a high C or D. Most of it well below that.

The only fault with this book is shared with most music books on the market. That is, the binding doesn't lend itself to actually using the book, since each side of an open book would have to be clipped for it to not shut on its own. If you buy it, take it immediately to a FedEx Kinkos or other printer, and have them slice off the existing binding, add a thick clear plastic front and back cover, and spiral binding. That will cost $7 to $10, but allows opening the book to any page and it laying flat. I've done this with about two dozen music books in my collection and it's well worth the cost.

  • A new take off on conventional Clarke, Brandt and Arban's. Will make you read it instead of playing it all by memory.

  • Good book
