I have many instructional books for the guitar. Fred Sokolow's instructional books and CDs are excellent. I wish I had this information years ago and highly recommend this book and CD not only for the novice, but also for those with more playing experience. 3 people found this helpful. First, this book is likely too basic for a "serious" jazz student. I come from a ae background and have always wanted to expand my chord vocabulary and have some sort of grasp of where all those crazy jazz chords come from. Will this book turn you into a "jazz guitarist"? I guess that depends on how hard you work and what your expectations are.

  • Terrific instructor with easy to understand explanations and diagrams.

  • Excellent learnimg tool. Shows what chords can b used in each chord family. A great.place to start jazz. I recommend fretboard roadmaps for guitar first. But you can start with this book because it covers some basics from the fretboard for guitar book. You will learn way more than you thought possible from one book. And fred doesnt waste time getting you playing some neat jazz stuff. Great when you start jazz at 62 like I did.

  • Having always been a rock-based musician, I never really had to learn some of the standard and jazz chord progressions. This book has helped explain many of the basis of those progressions and has made it easier for me to figure out early-era standards on my own. Somehow, this book has made more sense to me than others I have tried over the years. Recommended for other 'don't really care, but would like to know' players. P.S. I had misplaced my original copy and purchased a replacement, I liked this so much.

  • I have many instructional books for the guitar. Fred Sokolow's instructional books and CDs are excellent. I wish I had this information years ago and highly recommend this book and CD not only for the novice, but also for those with more playing experience.

  • Very informative!

  • great book, Fast shipping!

  • I found this complicated not to play but understand not worded well and not very specific you have to guess and hope you got it!

  • First, this book is likely too basic for a "serious" jazz student. I come from a rock/funk/blues/reggae background and have always wanted to expand my chord vocabulary and have some sort of grasp of where all those crazy jazz chords come from. Will this book turn you into a "jazz guitarist"? I guess that depends on how hard you work and what your expectations are. Because there's no magical switch to turn you into Pat Metheny or Wes Montgomery - it just takes countless hours of work mastering your knowledge of your instrument.

What I really like about this book is that it seems like it's geared EXACTLY to who I am and what I want. It presents its info in short, well-laid-out chapters and presents concepts on a basic level. For the most part, what I like about it is that it will present you with, say, a dominant 7th chord, then branches out to show you which of the complicated "jazz" chords are based on that chord form. Generally Fred only deals with forms with the root on the 6th or 5th strings. But still, that's a great starting point and it translates well to those of us who are familiar with basic barre chord forms rooted on the E and A strings.

The book also gets into circle of fifths, scalewise progressions, common jazz changes, passing chords, chord substitutions (on an introductory level), augmented and diminished chords...and a bunch of other stuff.

I like to open the book and just play through some of the jazz standard progressions he's written out, then I try to understand where the harmony is coming from and how the chords relate to the key the song is in.

Overall this is a great introduction to some heady subjects that can't be easily explained. So much jazz instruction assumes a tremendous amount of knowledge and it can makes things impenetrable at times. This book is a great starting point, and provides a lot to work on. I've owned it for a few years now and I still use it on a fairly regular basis.
