  • I was looking for a chord progression guide, to help as a reminder of which groups of chords work best with certain styles. I tried Volume 1, but it had virtually nothing about chord progressions, except at the end with a few pages of generic blues tunes using the chords demonstrated earlier.

The product description for Volume 2 made me think it would discuss chord progressions in more detail. Sadly, I was mistaken. The book picks up where the other left off, with variations on chords presented in Volume 1, plus a lot more intricate finger- stretching chords guaranteed to rarely be used outside jazz. There are exercises of sorts, in the fact that periodic practices are placed to utilize the chords listed. These sections are called, "progressions", but again, with no explanation of why the chords are chosen relative to one another. However, this does allow one to call this volume a "workbook" without misleading the reader.

Near the end of the book, there is some discussion about why one should utilize various "tensions" presented in the two volumes, along with a few scales showing how the chords mix into some of the modes. The chords and discussion take up 150 pages, with 151-174 demonstrating the chords from Volume 2 in 12-bar blues, with each and every major and minor key represented. The rest of the book consists of the index and ads for other books by Muse Eek, the publisher.

So once again, I was thwarted. I found three other books, all far cheaper, that focused entirely on progressions (all three together cost about as much as one of the Chord Workbook volumes), with many examples of progressions using the Roman numerals to guide the reader, allowing for substitution as desired to flavor the music.

If you're looking for progressions, don't pick up either volume of Chord Workbook for Guitar. If you're looking for excellent guides to alternative fingerings for jazz chords, then these two volumes will be of immense help.

  • This book really gave me everything I needed, to learn chording for guitar on my own. A great product.
