Tito Gobbi (24 October 1913 – 5 March 1984) was an Italian operatic baritone with an international reputation

Tito Gobbi (24 October 1913 – 5 March 1984) was an Italian operatic baritone with an international reputation. He made his operatic debut in Gubbio in 1935 as Count Rodolfo in Bellini's La sonnambula and quickly appeared in Italy's major opera houses. By the time he retired in 1979 he had acquired a repertoire of almost 100 operatic roles.

For this book, Tito Gobbi has drawn upon the experiences of a lifetime as interpreter, producer and teacher to analyse sixteen Italian operas, discussing each one's place in history, the importance of every character, above all the clues to interpretation that are to be found - but are often.

For this book, Tito Gobbi has drawn upon the experiences of a lifetime as interpreter, producer and teacher to analyse sixteen Italian operas, discussing each one's place in history, the importance of every character, above all the clues to interpretation that are to be found - but are often ignored - in the libretto and score. He also discusses the more technical aspects of voice, costume and make-up, and has an interesting chapter on the vital importance of the small part.

Tito Gobbi, a world famous baritone, produced operas for years at the Chicago Lyric Opera and stipulates that the main concern should be what the composer envisioned. Respect of the composer should be absolutely paramount and Tito Gobbi describes in easy to follow details how such productions and, of course, what singer do, how they react to others, et. should be based on the music alone. He feels that composers have said it all and whether you prefer classical productions or updated ones, the music, . the composer, should have the last word about how the the production should work

  • It is not as much "fun" as his first book but should be an absolute MUST for every opera producer/director - especially in an age where directors are chosen from all sorts of venues except from backgrounds and experience with operas and/or music.
Tito Gobbi, a world famous baritone, produced operas for years at the Chicago Lyric Opera and stipulates that the main concern should be what the composer envisioned. Respect of the composer should be absolutely paramount and Tito Gobbi describes in easy to follow details how such productions and, of course, what singer do, how they react to others, etc., should be based on the music alone. He feels that composers have said it all and whether you prefer classical productions or updated ones, the music, i.e. the composer, should have the last word about how the the production should work.
As an opera fan of long standing - I saw my first opera when I was 12 and am 90 years old now - I have seen too many directors from cinema and others, who feel that their ideas are so much better than Verdi's, Puccini's, etc. etc. and I have witnessed some of the atrocities they presented to the public because of their inflated but ignorant egos.
I also have attended some updated productions that worked extremely well because the director remained faithful to what the composer wanted. As outrageous as he may be, Peter Sellers comes to mind.
Finally, according to Tito Gobbi, what the composer wanted, should be the bible for every production and therefore, I cannot recommend this particular book as exactly that - The Bible - for any attempt to direct today's operas.

  • Must book for opera lovers.
