The Ultimate Audition Book is not fancy, but it's just what the working (and aspiring) actor is looking for: a treasury of well-chosen, short monologues from many time periods and sensibilities that enable an auditioner to make a positive impression fast. It's alright, if you're not looking for any comedy. The closest it comes to is "Serio-Comic", and even those are only slightly amusing.

Whichever books of monologues and scenes you may chose, just don't forget that an entire play is wrapped up nicely around your scene.

What we are presented here reads more like a professional actor's tool. A clear layout and varied selection makes this collection valuable. Whichever books of monologues and scenes you may chose, just don't forget that an entire play is wrapped up nicely around your scene. You might want to read one of those every now and again as well.

Provides a collection of monologues taken from fiction, essays, and poetry.
  • Just SO many WTH??? dialogues in there that either drop the F-bomb (or more) every other sentence, are about rape/violence, sexually explicit or just completely inappropriate for anything *I'd* ever be auditioning for...Some of the "really" old stuff was cool tho; I DO very much like the historical variety of offerings there...Love being able to go back in time for some of the true classics...

  • Very useful for the Acting class I teach.

  • This is what a monologue book should be. All the monologues were well written and had the play title on the page so you were actually able to look them up and find the context of the monologue.

There was a wide variety of time periods, styles, and characters. They were very well written and actually monologues (spoken to another person on stage) rather than soliloquies (spoken to audience or to oneself) where the two are often confused when people try to compile these types of books.

  • I regret buying this book. It has some pro's but the con's outweigh them by far. If you are a woman (like myself), this book is useless. Out of the 253 pages in the book, only 112 pages are "Women's Monologues." The rest are "Men's Monologues." I find this disturbing and upsetting. While I realize that the theater and film industries have been historically predominantly run by men, in this day and age, and with the book published in 1997, one would think there would be more of an equal ground. After looking through the women's monologues, I only found a few that were bordering on feasible to use for an audition, or even for practice in an acting class. Not only are many of them antiquated, but they also tend to be awkward. As a woman in her mid-twenties, it was very difficult to find age- appropriate material. Many of the monologues are geared towards women 30 -50 years old. Though many the monologues are by well known authors or from well known plays, and may be good monologues in themselves, that doesn't mean they are good for auditions. I would not recommend this book, unless you are a male in is 40's who wants to do classical monologues, or if you want to totally blow an audition. I did not find this book useful by any means. There are so many better books out there. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

  • I purchased this book after purchasing Vol. 4 (222 Comedy Monologues 2 Minutes & Under). It's alright, if you're not looking for any comedy. The closest it comes to is "Serio-Comic", and even those are only slightly amusing. Although it covers a great range of time periods and ages, I still get more use out of the comedic collection found in Vol. 4

  • This was outdated and nothing within could be used by my students. A waste of time and money.

  • This book was a real disappointment. I am not sure if the editor was lazy or used whatever source material was the cheapest or what. Out of 100+ selection for men, maybe 3 or 4 were at all useful. There are much, MUCH better monologue anthologies out there - pass on this one and keep looking!

  • I've used a lot of monologues from this book!
