My general opinion of Khara Plicanic is that she has an innate sense of design. Although Khara has a lot of design work that are leaning towards the whimsical side, which is not my style, she also has a lot of designs that are very clean and elegant. I am already fairly versed with designing albums with InDesign, so I have no problem following along, but I could imagine someone with zero experience with InDesign may find it a bit difficult (not impossible) to grasp. Note that InDesign is a relatively easy software to learn, especially if your primary focus is on designing album.

  • As a professional wedding photographer, this book is very useful to grasp a handful of useful tips to use Indesign to make quick yet elegant wedding albums within a very short period of time. The illustration is pretty good and in pretty much details, which make every normal readers very easy to follow and practice alongside the book reading. I finished the whole book within two days without any headache. It's quite enjoyable to read instead.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would love to pick up some quick tutorials and useful tips for Indesign, especially for wedding photographers who use Indesign to do album works.

  • I gave this book a 5-star rating even though it is not a perfect book. It is however, the only modern book on album design that I can find (most of the album design books were published when photographers discovered Photoshop and started going crazy with creating album spreads that looks very dated ... you know the look).

My general opinion of Khara Plicanic is that she has an innate sense of design. Although Khara has a lot of design work that are leaning towards the whimsical side, which is not my style, she also has a lot of designs that are very clean and elegant. Obviously, this book is targeted to wedding photographers, so the album layouts are beautiful, clean and timeless. Her design leans towards having strong images speak for themselves and reduce distracting elements such having 20 images in a spread, colorful backgrounds, images with lowered opacity and another image on top of it, decorative borders and effects, swirly images overlaid on top of main images, etc.

What I really love about this book is she dedicated a very long Chapter 7 on designing a 20-spread (40 pages) 10x10 album from scratch. She basically explains InDesign tools through demonstration of the album creation. The album layouts themselves are very fast to create, but they look beautiful. There are a couple of spreads that love a lot and created a template for myself. I would have love this book even more if she had two chapters dedicated to designing the album, but the two albums being different and thus utilizing different tools and techniques.

So why don't I think this book is perfect? Well, this book is appears to be targeted for beginning album designers. However, she doesn't really dive too deep in design philosophy nor the InDesign software. She would tell how to set up your InDesign and some of the tools to use, but doesn't really go into details of the tools. In addition, she only goes over the InDesign tools that are relevant to creating the album that fits her style.

In the chapter where she designed the album, she would bullet point the steps, but every so often, there are certain steps that are a little wordy and might have been better if she provided a few more screen shots of the steps instead. A few years back, I reviewed a few free YouTube videos on InDesign album designing basics and were able to pick it up in about an hour or so.

On a final note, this book is only 200 pages, so we should be very realistic about what she can cover? If you want to have more in-depth discussions on design principals or have someone explain each InDesign function and features in detail, there are books like that already out there ... and they're over 500+ pages. She actually has a chapter that covers "the next steps", which includes other resources you could consider.

In conclusion, I am still very satisfied with the book and I would recommend it to others. Even with a few years of experience with InDesign, I still find some golden nuggets of information in there. I hope this book is successful and we are able to see Khara and/or other authors to cover album designing in-depth.

  • Everything perfect, thanks!

  • How many times have you observed people attempting to use Microsoft Word as a page layout program over the years? Then they end up being extremely frustrated and have wasted a lot of valuable time. Well this is actually parallel to photographers attempting to use Adobe Photoshop, their old friend, for producing wedding albums. If this is you, STOP! Photoshop is a wonderful tool, but not for wedding album design and production. Avoid the frustration and avoid all the time wasted by using Adobe InDesign, the industry standard and best tool for album design. If this idea is intimidating or if you dread the thought of coming up on another learning curve then you must get a copy of this book by Khara Plicanic.

Khara has done an excellent job of explaining the entire process from setting up an efficient workflow and workspace, building your album spreads, proofing, editing, and exporting... all the way to printing your book. The emphasis is on helping you create an elegant and beautiful book where content drives the design (making you stand out from the herd) and on making you profitable by revealing how to cut the design time down to perhaps a couple of hours!

Take advantage of this resource, I've not found anything better if you want to produce awesome wedding albums. It truly is a guide, authored by a compassionate and knowledgeable photographer and designer who's has produced hundreds of albums.

  • I love this book and I love all that Khara has to teach about album design in a simple yet elegant way. A year ago I was so overwhelmed by creating an album. But Khara has changed all that because through InDesign, I can design anything now! (And from scratch too!) I highly recommend this book because Khara talks a lot about simplicity of both designing albums and business, yet she does it with a bit of humor because let's face it, sometimes our clients can be quite challenging. If you're ready to simplify your life and learn how to design albums that your clients will love, then this is the book for you!

  • This is the answer to my prayers to effective Album Design. Not only is this book a great guide with step by step instructions to making a great album easy and fast. Khama also shows you some of the ins and out of Adobe InDesign. Additionally she, shows you want else you can do with InDesign to help you, such as marketing business. Album moxie is a complete workflow package for creating quick, easy, and beautiful albums!
