The photographs by Hu Chui are stunning, and the reproductions of Chinese scrolls and paintings are excellent. However, the information about the Forbidden City is at the breakfast mush level - easy to digest but of little value. The information is superficial, and often inaccurate. Knowledgeable students of the Forbidden City will groan, and wince. It perpetuates blunders such as referring to the East Glory Gate as the East 'Flowery Gate,' and the Chinese advisor on eunuchs knows little about the subject. The book talks about emperors as if they all had the same personality and all.

Since 1925, the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive collection of artwork and artifacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Part of the museum's former collection is now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei

Chi Hu is the Patriarch of the Giant Demon Clan who befriended Wang Lin in Rain Celestial Realm. Around the time Wang Lin became Lord of The Sealed Realm, he returned home to Suzaku, only to find the planet completely changed and most of his old friends long dead, including Chi Hu.

Hu Chui was born in 1952 into a scholarly family in Shanghai, China and has had a keen interest in photography since childhood. In 1969, he was sent to the countryside, where he spent a number of years working as a farmer and manual laborer. During that time, Hu Chui continued with his avid pursuit of photographic art, learning theories and techniques on his own.

In 1978 Hu Chui joined the Palace Museum as a photographer. He later took charge of the Museum's photography studio in 1985. Throughout his career Hu Chui has tirelessly researched and experimented with ways to apply photography - an "imported" and relatively new art form - to the architecture and relics that represent China's ancient civilization. His aim is to break away from the staid approarch typically used in the past to photograph such monuments and art objects. In doing so, Hu Chui strives to inspire the viewer a simultaneous appreciation for the beauty of the objects themselves, and for the artistic medium he uses to capture these images.
