Terry James has been documenting the province of Nova Scotia since moving to the region in 1982. The author of numerous books inlcuding Lunenbrug County, Nova Scotia, and In Praise of Oxen, he makes his home in Riverport, Nova Scotia. It leaves out a lot of in depth useage but it does a good job of just showing appreciation of oxen. Owning is the real believing, and this gives more insight to the reality of a good yoke of oxen. Working with a good team is enjoying your work.

In Praise of Oxen book. Terry James' photographs illuminate this way of life by offering an impressive variety of images that capture the essential qualities of these adaptable animals, and the confidence and pride they instill in their owners. The photographs are richly complemented by tributes from the ox owners themselves, accentuating the oxen culture that has emerged over time. Together, text and images evoke a time and a way of life that is fast disappearing.

"If you have ever heard the sound of ox-bells, you are likely to remember them forever." Oxen - powerful, intelligent and versatile animals - have for centuries been molded to conform with human needs: from logging, farming, and hauling freight to performing in exhibitions, parades and ox-pulls. The story of oxen as beasts of burden, however, encompasses much more than mere animal husbandry. It is the story of a unique relationship between the ox owner and his team; a relationship which expresses itself as an entire way of life.Terry James' photographs illuminate this way of life by offering an impressive variety of images that capture the essential qualities of these adaptable animals, and the confidence and pride they instill in their owners. The photographs are richly complemented by tributes from the ox owners themselves, accentuating the oxen culture that has emerged over time. Together, text and images evoke a time and a way of life that is fast disappearing. In Praise of Oxen celebrates the humble oxen and the proud people who own them.

  • As expected

  • This book was a waste of time. Don't buy this one.

  • The pictures are great, a glimpse into a very special world where man and ox meet in rhythms of work and play.

  • I have thumbed through this book many times but did not have my own copy. Now that I have one in my library I can enjoy this great book anytime I want. I love the photographs, one in particular. It shows the floor of a forest and the "footprint" of an ox. All you see is a faint impression nothing is disturbed. Contrast that to the "footprint" of a tractor hauling logs. A photograph is worth a thousand words indeed. In addition, the great writing explains what is behind the scenes, the love the teamsters have for their "beasts." Outstanding book.
