Darwin's Enigma book.

By focusing on the very real shortcomings of the fossil record in backing up evolution, the author shows that there truly are more problems than solutions with the theory made popular by a one time divinity student intent on destroying the foundations of Christianity.

Online Books by. Luther D. Sunderland, Luther . 1929-: Darwin's Enigma (c1988) (illustrated HTML at creationism. 1929-).

Evolutionists have long known that Charles Darwin's original argument against his own theory ? that a lack of fossil evidence of transitional forms would reduce him to an embarrassing footnote in history ? was screamingly true. No legitimate fossil evidence exists that shows one species changing into another.

This startling realization led Luther Sunderland to an exhaustive search of the subject, and his findings show clearly that evolution is a theory in disarray.

From his own interviews with leading evolutionists, and an examination of the fossil evidence, Sunderland shows that the Enigma of Darwin?s anti-God philosophy is that the facts show it is anything but rock-solid.

  • If I were to rate my favorite books according to the amount of ink I used to underline and star vital passages, this one would come out near the top. It was here that I first learned a number of critical facts about evolution - and read the admissions of prominent evolutionists, including the late Stephen J. Gould of Harvard, that there really are no transitional forms in the fossil record. Ooops.

  • This is the best short introduction to the Intelligent Design critique that I have so far read. This was written in the 1980s, yet was done with such perspicuity, and research, that it is still easily on target now. Mr. Sunderland was an engineer and a Christian who passed in April of 1987, "having fought the good fight" and "kept the faith", according to a memoria left by Duane Gish in the 4th, revised (1988) edition of this work. And so though a scientist, even an inventor, all his life he was a committed - but quite rational - Creationist.

At that time, and even now, people do not understand that one can be intelligent, skeptical, and still be a believer in the authority and literalness of scripture. The book, and Mr. Sunderland's research, was no doubt prior to Michael Denton's critiquing of Evolutionary Theory in 1986. Herein Mr. Sunderland would list and enumerate many of the criticisms of Darwinism that Dr. Denton would expand upon greatly in his 1986 monograph. Nonetheless, Sunderland's observation and arguments are largely his own, and the book includes several interesting quotes and discussions from major scientists and philosophers.

Therefore, I recommend this small book very much, as a superb introductory critique of Evolutionary Theory, from which one can move on to Dr. Denton, or to later books on the Intelligent Design movement.

  • It is always great fun to have your opponents admit that their evidence is fairy tales, interpretation rather than facts, and hopeful speculation. Or worse that creationist interpretations actually fit the evidence better. Yet they still demand that we accept evolution as proven science. Interviews with evolutionists admitting no actual evidence.

  • While I am not a creationist, the evidence (or absence of evidence) adduced by this book is devastating to the so-called "modern synthesis" of Darwinism. The earth, if it is not billions of years old, is at least many millions of years old, and biological change up through the rock layers seems to demand some form of evolution. But I have been thoroughly convinced by the evidence that Darwinism had nothing to do with it. This is a great book, a book that will make you reason out for yourself (and question) the mystery of life's origins. I can't recommend Darwin's Enigma highly enough.

  • THis book is one of the most referenced and researched books I have come across in regards to the evolution/creation debate.

  • Although the book is a bit old, I think it does a reasonable job in explaining the difficulty of reconciling evolution with the fossil record. I don't have the original transcripts, but I don't think Sunderland really does have malacious intent when quoting the authorities.
For example, an earlier reviewer was concerned that Sunderland portrayed a distorted view of the supposed evolution of horses. However, if we look at the sentence before the quote, we find that Sunderland says these words: "He said that there are some people who are fed up with this exact point about "imaginary stories" that have been written about the nature of the history of life." He then proceeded to quote Dr. Eldrege on the matter of horse evolution, and how the story being told to the public is imaginary. Thus, no malacious intent is apparent- for Sunderland plainly tells the reader why he has cited the quote.
One would think a great deal of concern should be aroused by this type of false information being spread to the public. Imagine if creationists spread this type of false information in textbooks to millions and millions of students! But no, it is not really a concern that young students are being fed false information such as the horse series. However, it is apparently of great concern that Sunderland is not impressed by the "bushy" nature of the horse fossil record! He is accused of spreading false information merely because he debunks an age-old evolutionary myth about the nature of the horse fossil record! And, if indeed this "bushy" horse fossil record is one of the "best" evidences for evolution- then why isn't the "bushy" horse evolution in the textbooks?! I personally hope that the fossil horse "bush" is the best evidence around for evolution, in which case creationists needn't worry at all. It should be mentioned that the imaginary horse story is only one of many false, misleading, or fabricated icons of evolutionary theory available in the textbooks for young minds to consume. See "Icons of Evolution" for more information on similar falsehoods such as embryological recapitulation and the Miller-Urey experiments. That such falsehoods have been kept in the textbooks and even defended by evolutionary propagandists makes one fishy of the accusations these individuals hurl and Sunderland and others.
Overall, Sunderland does a good job exposing the true nature of the fossil record. And, as I've shown above, accusations of him misrepresenting the authorities should be taken with a large grain of salt.
