It is all about finding simplicity, a singular iconic image, something that evokes emotion from the viewer.

It’s no secret that bad guys appear in film, but finding out that a psychotic on-screen events were based on a true case drives home the point that monsters are very, very real.

Scream is a 1996 slasher film directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. The film revitalized the slasher film genre in the mid 1990's, similar to the impact Halloween had on late 1970's film, by using a standard concept with a tongue-in-cheek approach that combined straightforward scares with dialogue that satirized slasher film conventions

Award-winning fine art photographer Tim Palen serves up a visionary collection of images in his debut book collection GUTS, culled from his work in and around the marketing of six cutting-edge horror films, Hostel I and II and SAW I, II, III and IV. The 110-page book includes movie and event posters, production stills, outtakes, and location photos. The cover image telegraphs both the nature and sensibility of the work inside: sensual, sophisticated and veined with a drolly macabre sense of humor. GUTS demonstrates Palens mastery of the bold, alluring and unsettling image that is intrinsic to the horror genres enduring power. includes posters for the SAW Blood Drive, an annual Halloween event benefiting the Red Cross includes commentary by Eli Roth (HOSTEL I) and Darren Lynn Bousman (SAW II, SAW III, SAW IV), among others Book looks like raw supermarket meat and comes shrinkwrapped, nestled in a foam meat tray
  • I purchased this book so I can learn more about what goes on behind the screams. I like to learn and was really excited to get this book. When it arrived, it was adorably packed like a package of meat. I loved this feature and was excited to see what was in the inside.

Upon opening it, to me, it looked more like a portfolio then anything else. It was just pages of random photographs. Not much to do with horror and less to do with behind the scenes.

If you want to pay for a portfolio, then this book is for you but if you are looking for more, stay clear of this book. It was a huge waste of money.

  • A film art photography book that will seriously up the social status of your coffee table. Even the packaging is so groovy (the book arrives shrink-wrapped in a styrofoam tray, resting on a blood-drainage paper towel, like a piece of raw meat from a grocery store's butcher counter) that you won't want to throw it away once you've opened it. But it's the arresting, chillingly beautiful photographs inside that make Tim Palen's GUTS a must-have -- and not just for movie poster or camera buffs. It's a grind-up of flesh, death, sex, machinery, blood, and love. You'll be haunted and turned on at the same time. Palen shows that horror has a sort of beauty, and that beauty is not immune from horror. Some personal favorites: the series of Saw Nurse Blood Drive posters and the collection of Hostel posters.

  • I purchased this book under the pretense that it had something to do with "horror" and as the label had stated "Behind the scenes of some of the coolest horror films ever!" ... Unfortunately I could not open the packaging to look inside to see its contents but I was dismayed on getting home only to find that it had absolutely nothing to do with horror what so ever. I promptly returned it to the bookstore from where I purchased it.

If you are thinking of buying this book and are a fan of horror films...don't you will only be sorely dissapointed with it. There are some beautiful photos in it and some very bad Photoshopped ones too. Save your money and or buy Fangoria magazine instead for there is nothing remotely to do with horror in this book 'Guts'. The cover and its packaging are very misleading.
