This book, which brings together thirty years of the acclaimed photographer's best work, comprises portraits of people and places. In each image, Nomachi strives to reveal what unites individuals in the ineffable relationship between the whole and its every component: what it is, for example, that leads Muslims to Qa'aba, Buddhists to Lhasa, Ethiopian Christians to Lalibela.

Part photo essay and part travel diary, this moving book reflects Kazuyoshi Nomachi's own spiritual quest and his interest in pilgrimages, or, as he calls them, "prayer routes.

Pilgrimage" brings together 30 years of the acclaimed photographer's best work with his personal interest in the quest for self, others, and for God. A convert to Islam, Nomachi is in a position to offer us a completely new opportunity to speculate on faith and its potential to revitalize. Together text and image allow readers to make their own human pilgrimage. This is the latest title in the "Discovery" series.

Thus, Ali Kazuyoshi Nomachi, or Ali to his friends in the Arab world. Although Nomachi had no trouble finding a publisher for his book about the hajj, arranging an exhibition was difficult. Saudi Arabia is harder to get into than North Korea," said Nomachi, a stocky 53-year-old. Nomachi's groundbreaking pictures are the world's first glimpse into the heart of the Islamic faith, a religion with a 1,400-year history and more than a billion followers, but one little understood outside the Muslim world. It is hard to pick a single image from what is a remarkable body of work shot in parts of Saudi Arabia open only to Muslims.

Nomachi shows us the wonders of faith worldwide and provides a context in which to understand the way spiritual traditions shape lives across the globe. The photographer's journey began in 1975 in the Sahara desert. It was here that he began to discover the power of documentary photography.

A Photographer's Pilgrimage : 30 Years of Great Reportage. by Nomachi Kazuyoshi.

Part photo essay and part travel diary, this moving book reflects Kazuyoshi Nomachi's own spiritual quest and his interest in pilgrimages, or, as he calls them, "prayer routes." Here, through dramatic images that distill the essence of our humanity, the acclaimed photographer captures moments of prayer along pilgrimage routes in some of the world's most remote places, from the Sahara to the Andes, including the rarely photographed cities of Mecca and Medina.Having converted to Islam, Nomachi has arrived at an intensely personal understanding of what it means to search for God. Prayer, pilgrimage, and religion, he says, are phenomena that affect humanity as a whole, without distinction for individual traits or background. Such is the thinking that sharpens Nomachi's sensitivity to the elements of spiritual life.
  • I first stumbled upon Mr Nomachi's work many years ago in India. It was a giant hardcover book on Tibet and I was blown away by not only the beauty of the images, but the depth and intensity of the coverage. When I saw he had released a book of his best images from the past 30 years I rushed to buy it. It is an amazing book, truly unsurpassed in terms of its beauty and coverage. Considering he is not very well known outside of Japan I show it to photographer colleagues who have never heard of him and they are amazed that a photographer of this calibre could somehow slip under the radar. Truly one of the greats of the documentary photography world and a must buy for anybody with an interest in foreign cultures and religions.
