Stella Kramrisch (May 29, 1896 – September 2, 1993) was a cosmopolitan art historian, who was well known as a specialist in Indian art and Hinduism. After writing her dissertation on the essence of early-buddhist sculpture in India, she was invited to teach at Kala Bhavana in Shantiniketan (1922–24), from where she went on to a teaching post at Calcutta University (1924–1950)

Stella Kramrisch, an authority on Indian art, a teacher and a curator, died on Tuesday at her home in Philadelphia. She was 97 and lived near Philadelphia. She personified that systematic study in the series of books that followed: "Indian Sculpture" (1932), "A Survey of Painting in the Deccan" (1937), "Indian Terracottas" (1939), "The Hindu Temple" (1946) and "Arts and Crafts of Travancore" (1948). Examples of her skill were "The Art of Nepal and Tibet" (1960), "Unknown India: Ritual Art in Tribe and Village" (1968) and "Himalayan Art 700-1900" (1978), all at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Stella Kramrisch was the Professor of South Asian Art at the University of Pennsylvania for a long period of time.
Rabindranath Tagore heard her speak and invited her to come to India and teach at the Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan in 1922. She was appointed professor of Indian art at the University of Calcutta in 1924, where she taught until 1950. She married the Hungarian economist, Laszlo Nemenyi, an adviser to the viceroy, in 1929. Since they lived in different cities (Calcutta and Delhi), they saw little of each other. Stella Kramrisch was the Professor of South Asian Art at the University of Pennsylvania for a long period of time.
