Perhaps those who accuse MacArthur of teaching a false gospel I am half way through MacArthur's book. What emerges from this in-depth study of the gospel according to Jesus is a clear definition of the good news: Following Jesus means belief and surrender. This is the second time I am reading it. I am reading it again because a lot of people, mostly charismatics, have accused MacArthur of false doctrine based on this book. It must result in life change. Reading this amazing book has challenged me to rethink many things: evangelism, youth groups, church ministry, missions, the fruit of the Spirit, confrontation, judging, wealth, poverty, etc.

John MacArthur has accomplished a superb work in this book. Known for his activism against "easy-believism" and superficial Christianity, MacArthur has written a marvelous little book detailing the ACTUAL gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel has become so utterly watered down today it is no wonder the church has become weakened in its effectiveness. MacArthur challenges believers to read the truth about The Truth and to become more than just a comfortable group of "pew-warmers" on Sunday mornings. MacArthur reminds us God did not call us to be His "cheerleaders

What did Jesus mean when he said Follow me? MacArthur warns against easy believism, explains . As The End Times Near. com User, April 21, 2008. The Gospel According to Jesus: What Is Authentic Faith? I don't always care for MacArthur's writings

As The End Times Near. The Gospel According to Jesus: What Is Authentic Faith? I don't always care for MacArthur's writings. He seems a bit full of himself. But on this topic he is right on the spot.

The first edition of The Gospel According to Jesus won wide acclaim in confronting the “easy-believism” that has characterized some aspects of evangelical Christianity. Over the past 50 years, a handful of books have become true classics, revered world-wide for their crystal-clear presentation of the Gospel and lauded for their contribution to the Christian faith. These extraordinary books are read, re-read, and discussed in churches, Bible study groups, and homes everywhere. John MacArthur’s The Gospel According to Jesus is one of those books. In The Gospel According to Jesus, MacArthur tackles the idea of “easy believism,” challenging Christians to re-evaluate their commitment to Christ by examining their fruits. MacArthur asks, “What does it really mean to be saved?” He urges readers to understand that their conversion was more than a mere point in time, that, by definition, it includes a lifetime of obediently walking with Jesus as Lord. This 20th anniversary edition of MacArthur’s provocative, Scripture-based book contains one new chapterand is further revised to provide Christians in the 21st century a fresh perspective on the intrinsic relationship between faith and works, clearly revealing Why Jesus is both Savior and Lord to all who believe.
  • John MacArthur is an enigma to me. His exegesis on some subjects seem to fall so short of the obvious meaning throughout scripture while others, such as with The Gospel According to Jesus, are so overwhelmingly sound and convicting that it is a clear work of genius. While every theologian has their positions on doctrine, John MacArthur's approach can be divisive and harmful to the body of Christ with doctrines that are not essential to salvation (Strange Fire). And, while this book and the topic of "Lordship Salvation" is no exception to controversy, Mr. MacArthur has hit it out of the park with this book and the controversy is welcomed as the consequence of being wrong about your eternal destiny is so enormous!

I am reading this book again for the second time in as many months. MacArthur makes it abundantly clear time and time again that salvation is by grace thru faith and not meritorious and there should be no doubt in the reader's mind with regard to his position on this. MacArthur does a masterful job of proving his argument and answers opposing views straight on with clear biblical support. The Gospel According to Jesus is a must read for every believer and is now one of my all time favorite books, (which is saying a lot because I swore I would never read anything from MacArthur again). The topic and the truths presented are very compelling. Please read!

  • I have studied this subject for months as one who sits in the pews. I have read what the Bible itself says about it vs what the preaching of today is on the subject from most pulpits out there. This is a problem of an incomplete gospel and redefining of terms that not even the most seasoned Christian in the pew seems to recognize and it's present in even the most conservative Bible based churches. It is so close to the truth, but it can be very hard to tell the difference. It has been going on for generations. The truth needs to come back and a complete gospel needs to be preached. I think it hits on the key element of what is wrong with preaching today at its core. After studying the situation for so long, I think this book is by far the best information and the most thorough on the subject. I found it very easy and understandable as well and thoroughly documented with scripture. I think this book belongs in every Christians library and deserves to be read by all pastors and Christians.

  • Are you a Christian? Are you really sure or are you following a false GOSPEL OF "EASY BELIEVISM" where they told you just believing is Jesus is enough. This book will help you see what true Christianity is all about and you WILL find out if you are truly saved. Think about this carefully and JUDGE YOURSELF. This book will help. Matthew 7: 21-23 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many [a]miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

  • I am amazed at how people argue against this, so called, "Lordship Salvation" topic. Whether one reads the book or not, Jesus Christ was perfectly clear that He is Lord over those who believe in Him. The fruit of salvation *MUST* be expressed in a Christians life to reveal the truth of conversion. Many people state that they are Christians, but show forth NO expression of that truth in their lives. It's simple ~ Jesus demands obedience! The Bible shows forth this truth time and time again...

    [Quote]

"Then his (Jesus) mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you. "But he answered them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and DO IT." Luke 8:19-21

I recommend this book to all Christians. I believe MacArthur does an excellent job in defending the truth of Jesus' Gospel. If you are not a fan of John MacArthur, or you don't believe in the sovereignty of God; please do NOT let that stop you from reading this book. The truth contained in its pages alone is worth the read. :)

  • Today in evangelicalism where many are finding it easy to compromise the basic tenets of the Christian faith and the true gospel is under attack even from some who hold lofty positions within evangelical circles, John MacArthur must be commended for presenting a comprehensive, biblically sound book that vindicates the true gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a must-read for all those. serious Christians, who understand that the authentic gospel is central to the building of the kingdom of God. This book is also loaded with biblical evidence that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Christ is both Lord and Savior and true salvation hinges on the acceptance of this.

  • Straightforward theology, based on "Sola Scriptura". John MacArthur doesn't mince words when talking about the "Jesus Lite" Gospel and its proponents. The book is a fully documented exegesis of the biblical text, and it cross-references verses to give full context to points of contention. John MacArthur doesn't take prisoners. His business is to save souls, not to grow a big church at the expense of the souls who gather to worship and hear the Gospel. Some won't like the --sometimes stern-- admonition, some will. A situation not so different from that of the Israelites who gathered around Christ to hear His Gospel. This rabbi was no namby-pamby: you used your ears and eyes to listen, observe and understand... or you could go home. And this tough-love approach is what I liked in this book. Solid, fully documented, no frills, packs a wallop.
