Entering the kingdom of God is navigating through this life with an unobstructed and rational view. Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

Of all the books written through the centuries on biblical interpretation, none can be considered more rational than Swedenborg's Heavenly Secrets (Arcana Coelestia). Swedenborg's work is unique, discerning a deeper meaning within Scripture. The Genesis stories are seen as symbols of spiritual reality rapturously beautiful when read in the Swedenborgian context. This book demonstrates that the Bible is not a scientific treatise on how the physical world came into being but a story of the human soul, of the nature of God, and of the relationship between God and man. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
  • The good news is: the Arcana Coelestia is Swedenborg's best book, hands down.
The bad news is: it's volume one out of 12. It may be useful to know that the edition in question here is an older translation. More modern ones exist and are easier to read,

Swedenborg painstakingly embarks upon an explanation of the book of Genesis.
The writer Borges comments: ‘In flat Latin he catalogued whenless whyless ultimate things.’
This catches the mood and essence of Secrets of Heaven. Swedenborg is relentless and driven, yet academic, professional, and systematic. A very interesting combination for a mystic.

The text is old, written in the middle of the 18th century. This is obviously noticeable in the language. It's dry. Or as Borges says, flat. In some ways it reads like an engineering manual. An engineering manual for the mind. On the other hand there is much exciting stuff here. Swedenborg is not inhibited when describing his dream-like experiences in another world, a world he calls the spiritual world and claims really exists.

This is not an intellectual commentary on the Bible. In fact, Swedenborg's books are currently not accepted as commentary in any theological seminary. Swedenborg wrote as if he was simply reporting on insights and experiences given to him from above. Not unlike modern-day New Age channelers. A lot of assumptions are made and have to be taken on by the reader.

One of the hard to accept features of the Arcana Coelestia is the blithe certainty with which Swedenborg explains that the Old Testament stories were a foreshadowing, a parable of the life of Jesus Christ. He means this literally. Even though the book of Genesis had been written some 3000 years ago, the events reported in the older text are, according to Swedenborg, a blow-by-blow commentary on the adventures of Jesus of Nazareth. This makes it necessary for the reader to accept a new concept of time. Time isn’t a straight line.

The effort to read this work is challenging and rewarding.

  • In Arcana Coelestia (twelve volumes), a divinely-inspired Swedenborg lays out the meaning of the Books of Genesis and Exodus. Through correspondences, the meaning of each chapter, each verse, and each word are explained. Additionally, there are descriptions of resurection and awaking in the spiritual world after death, life after death, and a host of other inter-chapter discussions.
Swedenborg shows that the Bible has a external or natural sense (the stories) and an internal or spiritual sense (the inner meaning). The spiritual sense of the Books of Genesis and Exodus teaches of the development of the human mind and the regeneration of humans.
For example, the spiritual sense of the first chapter of Genesis (the creation story) provides an overview of the regeneration of a person. Specifically, it discusses how God leads us, how we adopt truths and cause those truths to lead us, how those truths are used by God to accomplish good, etc. (Swedenborg claims that the first eight chapters of Genesis are not historically true, but parables told by people to convey the message of the internal sense.)
These twelve volumes are still in print world wide in an amazing array of languages. A new translation (from the original latin) was recently completed. ( can obtain these books through the Swedenborg Society in New York or the Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, PA, USA.)

  • ~~~Many a people are attracted to Kabbalah, regardless of their associations with Torah, possession of Jewish mindsets, and recognition of hierarchy in every kind of knowledge. Direct involvement with Kabbalah, whilst lacking this awareness, can be tragic, both mentally and physically. Putting aside the debate of religions herewith, for example, do you jump to "Pulse Rejuvenating", "Marrow Cleansing" Practise without slightest foundation of Taoism ? Do you jump to Personal Deity~~ Dharma~~ not knowing general Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism ?
It is great that Dr. Rav Berg provided us with "Kabbalah for the Layman" Volumes. The volumes, in my opinion, serve to extract the worldly applications from mystical orientations.
For the seekers who are looking at spiritual ponders outside the vesper bell, Heavenly Secrets (12 volumes in total) is a set of revealed commentary on Genesis and Exodus. Profuse hidden meanings of the open sentence compositions are explained. Again~~ we~~ wish not debate the source of author Emmanuel Swedenborg's revelations, I merely wish to introduce and share with patrons the deep and profound meanings, in New Thought perspective, of the first two books of the Testament.
The volumes request commitment and as well judgment, yet we, as "average joes", would get more out of Arcana Coelestia, than in risking the senses twisting with Kabbalah, Zohar, Bahir and Palms of Deborah.
Perhaps I should clarify "alternative" does not~~~~ mean and suggest comparison. They are not comparable. Arcana Coelestia stands on its own.~~~

  • The truly astounding thing to me about the Arcana Coelestia is that it tells about the life of Christ--His inner temptations and growth--things we don't learn about in the Bible. So while it gives new light to the Old Testament, it also adds to the New Testament and knowledge about Christ. It is fascinating and inspiring!
