Useful for beginning students, but rather florid in style, and theologically Arminian.

book by Anthony Phillips.

0521086361 (ISBN13: 9780521086363). We always talk about retcons in comics, but what about in the Bible? Deuteronomy is what happens when people who have seen their nation disbursed among other countries try to rally around a national identity, with all the dangerous rhetoric that implies. In this book, God wants them to utterly wipe out their rivals.

Dr Phillips's volume, like the others in the series, contains the text in the NEB translation, with introductory material preceding it, and a commentary directly following each section of text. Dr Phillips explains the nature and function of the whole book, its place in Jewish religious history and thought, and among the Old Testament books, and its continuing relevance today.
  • Cambridge Bible Commentaries are well put together, discussing competing theories and theological perspectives in each of the series. This is a particularly good book in the collection and I recommend you start with this one. (I own several of the series.)

  • The series of books known as The Cambridge Bible Commentaries is excellent, very informative, scholarly but easy to read. Each volume contains an English translation of the original text, the Hebrew of Deuteronomy in this book, according to the New English Bible translation. Among much else, it has the historical background to the biblical book - in this book, it dates Deuteronomy to 621 BCE when 2 Kings states a law book (Deuteronomy) was found that led to King Josiah's religious reforms, a map, a chapter on what is Deuteronomy, an introduction to each chapter, the English translation of each chapter with notes following each section of the chapter, notes for further reading, and an index.
