Stott played a key role as a leader of evangelicalism within the Church of England, and was regarded as instrumental in persuading evangelicals to play an active role in the Church of England rather than leaving for exclusively evangelical denominations. There were two major events where he played a key role in this regard.

John Stott has been a giant on the landscape of the worldwide church for more than half a century. Here, however, are almost three dozen brief, very human-sized portraits of a man who has been a radical disciple of Jesus all those years. One of the outstanding gifts that God gave to John Stott was an incredible capacity for friendship. Never did the word single seem less appropriate than for this lifelong bachelor. So in these sketches by his friends, relatives, coworkers and worldwide partners in the gospel, we see portions of his life and personality that many have not. We see the small acts of kindness and service he performed such as regularly emptying wastebaskets and taking hours to find the old, toothless mother of a priest in India. We see the range of his interests, from Woody Allen movies to chocolate. And we see a poignant portrait of Stott as he continues to follow Christ in the midst of age and physical decline. This volume, edited by Christopher Wright, includes contributions from many international leaders such as Michael Green, Keith and Gladys Hunt, Samuel Escobar, René Padilla, Ajith Fernando, Peter Kuzmic and Mark Labberton. We also find insight from others less well-known to the world but very well-known to one of the great international Christian leaders of our day.
  • I have read John Stott's books for many years, and always benefitted from them. I was happy to get to read about the personal side of his life. I only wish I could have known him!

  • This book came timely and just as ordered. A great book which I highly recommend! Perfect gift for the John Stott fan.

  • New York Times columnist David Brooks once wrote that if evangelicals could elect a pope, it was likely that they would choose John Stott. Stott's recent death at age 90 has been marked by extended obituaries in newspapers and magazines throughout the world, and they mostly repeat what is known to many, including Brooks: John Stott's inclusion in Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world was well-deserved. This new book looks at Stott from an entirely different point of view: in it, thirty-four of Stott's friends recall his "personal" side. Not only was he an incredibly well-prepared and well-read preacher, writer and scholar, but he was also a passionate "birder" (bird-watcher), lover of chocolate and Woody Allen movies! Perhaps the most poignant chapters were those written by those who spent time with him near the end of his life, including physician John Wyatt, long-time friend Mark Hunt and Christopher Wright, the book's editor and Stott's successor as the international director of the Langham Partnership (which Stott founded). For many, including me, Stott was the twentieth century's Bible expositor par excellence. This volume of memories by many who knew him personally helps "round out" the picture of a man who was not only a visionary and leader, but also a humble, gentle, generous human being. Moving and timely.
