Soul and Self" traces the parallels between psychological and spiritual development over the course of a man's lifetime

Soul and Self" traces the parallels between psychological and spiritual development over the course of a man's lifetime. It demonstrates the common interest of psychology and religion in the "self" or "soul" and addresses the central question of how we can become more aware of our soul and benefit from its guidance. Each chapter traces the stages that are involved in this process.

Heart, Self, and Soul is the first book by a Western psychologist to explore the rich spiritual tradition of Sufism as a path for personal growth. Western psychotherapy aims largely to help us eliminate neurotic traits formed in childhood and adapt to society.

Self psychology, a modern psychoanalytic theory and its clinical applications, was conceived by Heinz Kohut in Chicago in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, and is still developing as a contemporary form of psychoanalytic treatment. In self psychology, the effort is made to understand individuals from within their subjective experience via vicarious introspection, basing interpretations on the understanding of the self as the central agency of the human psyche

Models for psychological growth cannot be superimposed onto spiritual growth because of some. significant differences in the way in which self-awareness, spirit, and self-transcendence are defined and used by psychology and theology.

Models for psychological growth cannot be superimposed onto spiritual growth because of some. It follows that psychotherapy and spiritual direction make unique contributions to human growth and need not be perceived as synonymous or competitive. There is a point at which psyche and spirit, psychotherapy and spiritual direction, meet: the place of healing.

  • This book isn't overly long (a good thing, since the topic of finding oneself based on religion can be overdone), but it speaks its purpose. This book effectively and efficiently draws parallels between spiritual and psychological growth, and reminds the audience that sometimes, they're one in the same.

  • If you are a man, like me, trying to make some sense of who you are and how your relationships work with other people, especially your spouse/partner, then this is a great book for you. It is clearly written and covers the different stages of life development from adolescence to retirement in a way that really made sense to me.

  • The Roman Catholic catechism long ago proclaimed that "man is a creature, composed of body and soul, made in the image and likeness of God.' However one interprets the assertion about the Divine, the first is indisputable. After Descartes (1596-1650) the Western world moved steadily to demarcate the two. Freud brought them back together, unexpectedly; he did not accept the reality of a soul,a spiritual dimension to human life. Since Freud psychological positions have broadened well beyond his biological theory. The same psychological processes undergird every domain of mental life. To paraphrase Jung, where does the Self end and God begin? Who knows? But the psychic road for believer and non-believer is the same, and all come to the proverbial fork.

  • Women do not seem to exist for this author. Psychological growth apparently applies to men only. Uninspired dry language takes all the life out of the topic. Would be better off to read the originals cited in the book, such as Carl Rogers works.

  • Soul and Self is one of those small, readable books that is far more important and thought provoking than its length would suggest. Dr. Fehrenbach, a practicing psychotherapist with a lifelong interest in St. Augustine, teaches us how a man's self and soul develop and grow throughout a lifetime. "Charlie," a fictional patient who comes for therapy in the midst of a midlife crisis, is used to present the psychological dimension of healthy development, while St. Augustine serves as the primary model to describe men's spiritual development. The reader learns through their life journeys about the key milestones and the crucial psychological and spiritual choices men face. The author highlights the crucial role of "sponsors," those key figures in our lives who support and guide the self and soul, and whose gaze and voice eventually become part of our own inner workings. Dr. Ferhenbach draws from the writings of Erik Erikson, Carl Rogers, and St. Augustine. This little book will linger in one's day, as it reminds the reader of his own development and his own sponsors, and our search for a continuing relationship with God. It is filled with gentle, humorous wisdom, from early identity formation through the end of life. For example, on life in our twenties Dr. Fehrenbach writes, "The key to success in the twenties is to keep one's feet moving. The course we follow has a lot in common with an earlier period when we learned to walk. The educational paradigm is the same: trial and error. The process inevitably involves stumbling, progress is rarely linear, it takes time, and it usually makes parents and sponsors nervous if they watch." (p.65). This book would make a thought provoking book for adult discussion groups, and would be valuable to psychologists and clergy seeking to understand adult psychological and spiritual development. I recommend this book for men of any age, and those who seek to understand them, as it is helps us think about how to "plan our time and arrange each day for the good of our soul."
