The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints historically taught that the practice of homosexuality, meaning sexual behavior with someone of the same sex, was a choice or curable mental illness. Recent leadership has indicated that it may not be a conscious choice and that it may be treatable. The church teaches that regardless of the cause of homosexual. In 1992, when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases as a mental illness, the church produced Understanding and Helping Those With Homosexual Problems, which removed all reference to homosexuality as a disease.

The solution to homosexual attractions is not to simply suppress the feelings and control the behavior through willpower. The goal is to resolve the inner conflicts that created the homosexual attractions. Although homosexual behavior can be stopped in the short term by exercising willpower, the unmet emotional and social needs won't go away until they are fulfilled in nonsexual ways. As men resolve the underlying causes, the unwanted impulses will diminish or disappear.

  • American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry:

"Clinicians should be aware that there is no evidence that sexual orientation can be altered through therapy, and that attempts to do so may be harmful. There is no empirical evidence adult homosexuality can be prevented if gender nonconforming children are influenced to be more gender conforming. Indeed, there is no medically valid basis for attempting to prevent homosexuality, which is not an illness. On the contrary, such efforts may encourage family rejection and undermine self-esteem, connectedness and caring, important protective factors against suicidal ideation and attempts. Given that there is no evidence that efforts to alter sexual orientation are effective, beneficial or necessary, and the possibility that they carry the risk of significant harm, such interventions are contraindicated."

  • While this book takes a compasionate view of homosexuality itis harmful in the fact that it maintains that anyone, if they haveenough faith and determination, can change. Park is quick to point out that the evidence supporting the "born that way" theory are not conclucive but fails to mention the same thing about his own theories. The author himself says, "I personally attest that it is possible to diminish homosexual attractions". Diminishing homosexual attractions is not the same as changing them to heterosexual ones. People who read this book should do so with a grain of salt. END
