I have collected volumes from the Classics of Western Spirituality series for over 30 years, and this is one of the best volumes in the series. German Protestants have produced a rich tradition of devotional literature, but much of it has not been translated for the English reader. I wish that the book had included parallel texts of the hymns in the original German, because some translators take such liberties with the text to make a singable English version.

The doctrine of the spiritual senses has played a significant role in the history of Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox spirituality. What has been largely unremarked is that the doctrine also played a significant role in classical Protestant thought, and that analogous concepts can be found in Indian theism

Academic journal article The Hymn. A graduate of Brown, Yale Divinity School, and the Yale University Graduate School, Eric Lund is Professor of Religion and Director of International and Off-Campus Studies at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota. Intending in part to show that viewing the second century of Lutheranism solely as a time of contentious debates on dogma is not accurate, Lund provides new translations of a number of devotions by three important writers of the era: Johann Gerhard (1582-1637), Heinrich Mueller (1631-1675), and Christian Scriver (1629-1693).

This latest in the massive Classics of Western Spirituality Series helps to fill in a hole in the anglophone world’s knowledge of Lutheranism after the Reformation. The three devotional writers featured here-Johann Gerhard, Heinrich Müller, and Christian Scriver-as well as the assorted hymnwriters were all seventeenth-century men, well after the Reformation but just before the flowering of Pietism.

The volume contains a complete new translation of Sacred Meditations, a highly influential devotional text written by Johann Gerhard (1582-1637) the most prominent Lutheran theologian of the Age of Orthodoxy as well as an excerpt from one of his later books, which instructs readers in the practice of meditation. In addition, there are excerpts from Heinrich Müller (1631-1675) and Christian Scriver (1629-1693), spiritual reformers who influenced the reshaping of spiritual focus that took place between the late Reformation and the rise of Lutheran Pietism. Müller s meditations, drawn from his sermons, are sometimes provocative and always lively. Scriver s meditations are an example of the genre of emblem literature. They colorfully describe scenes or stories in order to advance a moral or spiritual message. Several of these texts are translated here into English for the first time.Lutheran hymns constituted some of the most notable examples of German poetry during the seventeenth century. This selection of religious lyrics, from eleven different authors, reveals the full range of sentiments found within early Lutheranism. Many of these hymns continue to be used for Lutheran worship down to the present day.
