I have collected volumes from the Classics of Western Spirituality series for over 30 years, and this is one of. .The Hymns incude so many of the German Classics. In most cases he uses the translations by Catherine Winkworth, a good poet in her own right.
I have collected volumes from the Classics of Western Spirituality series for over 30 years, and this is one of the best volumes in the series. German Protestants have produced a rich tradition of devotional literature, but much of it has not been translated for the English reader. I wish that the book had included parallel texts of the hymns in the original German, because some translators take such liberties with the text to make a singable English version.
The doctrine of the spiritual senses has played a significant role in the history of Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox spirituality. What has been largely unremarked is that the doctrine also played a significant role in classical Protestant thought, and that analogous concepts can be found in Indian theism

A graduate of Brown, Yale Divinity School, and the Yale University Graduate School, Eric Lund is Professor of Religion and Director of International and Off-Campus Studies at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota. Intending in part to show that viewing the second century of Lutheranism solely as a time of contentious debates on dogma is not accurate, Lund provides new translations of a number of devotions by three important writers of the era: Johann Gerhard (1582-1637), Heinrich Mueller (1631-1675), and Christian Scriver (1629-1693).

This latest in the massive Classics of Western Spirituality Series helps to fill in a hole in the anglophone world’s knowledge of Lutheranism after the Reformation. The three devotional writers featured here-Johann Gerhard, Heinrich Müller, and Christian Scriver-as well as the assorted hymnwriters were all seventeenth-century men, well after the Reformation but just before the flowering of Pietism.
