This book helped me discover that I can realize my dreams and accomplish the vision that burns in my heart no matter where I find myself on the ladder to success! It contains page after page of practical insights and encouragement to faithfully carry out the tasks that are entrusted to me. I highly recommend this book!

Hornsby and the Range's second album, Scenes From The Southside (on which Peter Harris replaced Mansfield) was released in 1988.

With the success of the single, the album The Way It Is went multi-platinum and produced another top five hit with "Mandolin Rain" (co-written, as many of Hornsby's early songs were, with his brother John). Every Little Kiss" also did respectably well. Other tracks on the album helped establish what some labeled the "Virginia sound", a mixture. The Second Coming" is a poem written by Irish poet W. Yeats in 1919, first printed in The Dial in November 1920, and afterwards included in his 1921 collection of verses Michael Robartes and the Dancer. The poem uses Christian imagery regarding the Apocalypse and Second Coming to allegorically describe the atmosphere of post-war Europe. It is considered a major work of modernist poetry and has been reprinted in several collections, including The Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry.

Leading from the Second. Published April 25, 2005 by Billy Hornsby.

Pastor Billy Hornsby sets out to debunk that mentality by showing there are many benefits in being second in command. For the most part, it is an egotistical world that only looks out for number one. Hornsby explains that what makes the number-two position difficult is often caused by the environment we grow up in. He points out this is a dangerous mindset. Everyone is subordinate to someone-some board, some coach, some law, some other leader

This book details the steps needed to be taken by those who want to become a successful subordinate leader and their struggle to serve faithfully and still fulfill his own sense of calling.
  • whether your first or last on the "ladder," this is full of great info! well organized!

  • Awesome book of all those in ministry.

  • Billy Hornsby writes from personal experience as well as using examples from scripture and from contemporary leaders in industry and those within the church who have served in roles as "second in command." Lessons are drawn from the life of Joseph and the important role he played in God's plan for His people in Israel.

Excellence and integrity, forgiveness instead of retaliation, point of view, and an understanding of the second in command culture are all a part of Billy's formula for success. Networking, leverage, and influence are also an important part of your role in your organization. Hornsby demonstrates how the reader can recognize and hone their qualifications, personal traits, and leadership skills.

The format of the book is designed for reader ease in assimilating and applying the leadership strategies under consideration. I appreciated the questions, charts, and other visual illustrations that reinforced and enhanced the written portions of the narrative.

Hornsby provides life skills coaching for personal success as well as keys to success as second in command. I personal found the chapter on insights meaningful and helpful as Billy presented a leadership insight with a management insight and related these to relational insights.

"Success for the Second in Command" is a book for the corporate vice president, the associate pastor, and for those in any subordinate leadership role, whether in industry, business, or in the administration of the ministry of the church. This is an important and timely guidebook, destined to become a classic on how to become successful as a subordinate leader.

  • I was thoroughly excited to read through a book that truly seemed to get at the heart of being a 2nd Chair Leader. Where it succeeded: A lot of Bible is referenced. Where it failed: Often, the scripture referenced is interpreted in such a way as to assist the human readers to view themselves as the answer to their own problems or questions. Being a 2nd Chair leader is no easy task. To read through examples in which the provided answer is to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps - this reeks of self-glorification, self-preservation, and personal ambition at the expense of others. The reader becomes the center of attention, instead of God and his plan to use the leader for his coming Kingdom. Is initiation or execution bad on the part of the leader? Absolutely not! Paul often encourages and challenges his readers to not be lazy and to work hard. But the root answer as to why they're not to be lazy or work hard - the Gospel.

This book unfortunately paints a very worldly understanding of what it looks like to be in ministry leadership - specifically the 2nd chair of leadership. It pulls too often from a business-minded understanding of how organizations work. Ultimately, Jesus was not the hero, and the Gospel was not the answer to being a better 2nd Chair leader.

If you are in a position of being an associate pastor, or some other form of 2nd chair leader (within ministry) I heartily recommend you read "Second in Command" by Dutch Sheets and Chris Jackson, "Sticky Teams" by Larry Osborne, and "Five Dysfunctions of a Team" by Patrick Lencioni. These resources will serve you much better in your pursuit to seek spiritual guidance 'and' pragmatic approaches to being a better 2nd Chair leader.

  • These principles do not work for those with A type personalities. In the real church, senior pastors can be brutal to talented associates with leadership abilities.

I know full well, having been abused in two churches; first, by a senior pastor who resented my effective leadership of the church's pre-school, second, by a senior pastor who resented my effectively researching a theological question. I was fired from the first position and forced out of the second. In the first, in Newtown PA, the pastor pursued vengeance by causing a mortgage to be denied that would have taken us out of a rental on the church property; then, he hired and attorney to evict us without a housing alternative. In the second, in Hastings NE, the pastor harassed me until I resigned; then, he slandered me to every church where I sought another position until I was unable to serve in any position other than a volunteer solo missionary.

This last ministry, in Frederick MD, was the most satisfying of my life because I was able to serve Jesus Christ with all of the gifts of leadership and teaching which He bestowed upon me. I was facilitated by the Godly leaders of my missions agency instead of hampered by the jealousy and spitefulness of insecure, petty senior pastors.

  • This book helped me discover that I can realize my dreams and accomplish the vision that burns in my heart no matter where I find myself on the ladder to success! It contains page after page of practical insights and encouragement to faithfully carry out the tasks that are entrusted to me.

    I highly recommend this book!
