  • I read this book several years ago and enjoyed reading it again. Good, solid storyline, nice love story and good content for ministering purposes as well. I will store in my "read again" folder. ????

  • Reeves is so harsh in the beginning but as the story unfolds we learn why. He grows so much thanks to Anna. This is a delightful story and you will fall in love with the Chatams. I love the Christian references. Tnese are feel good stories.

  • I loved the book so much. It was an easy read and I can't wait to buy the next one.

  • As with all books in this series, it is a great read. You need to get the eitire4 series to appreciate it.

  • Chatam House
    Book 1

I read this book a couple years ago, and just read it again to make my way through the whole series. I have actually upped my rating from 3 to 4. This was actually a really good book! I loved, especially, the last fifty pages or so. I actually thought this book could have gotten five stars except for the below stuff. I did feel that it had a bit of a disrespectful tone to it...but I must say I did love the scene with Gilli's mother...very well-written!

Below is my earlier review after removing a few irrelevant lines. Definitely enjoyed reading it more this time around!

After a swarm of honeybees make their way into the Leland attic, father and daughter are forced to leave their home and stay at the Chatam House where Reeves' three spinster triplet aunts live. His first day back, he meets Anna who had tormented him all throughout school. He wasn't happy to see her...

There were a few uncomfortable places in this book for me. First of all, we watched a very, very immature scene where Anna turned up her stereo in order to tune her aunt out. This was so "junior high." I didn't find the scene funny or feel a bit sorry for Anna. I think she was very disrespectful to her aunt on several occasions. I understand that her aunt was a bit underhanded and strong-handed when dealing with Anna, but she WAS Anna's grandmother and deserved more respect then Anna gave her. I found Anna's actions downright shameful at times!

I also didn't appreciate Anna's teaching Gilli to hang upside down with a dress on. I thought that was way over the top as well...

I loved the cat and Gilli, though I thought her father should have been a bit sterner about the cat. I also think Reeves got too much flack on his raising his daughter. It's tough being a single parent and having to be both the good guy and the bad guy all the time. I thought Gilli needed a little bit of love and some discipline, but I din't necessary see Reeves as a tough father...

    .
This is a really nice book which I enjoyed a lot. Anna was a wonderful person who was dealing with her life as best she could. However she actually made a few things harder for herself as she was cutting off her nose to spite her face (as the saying goes). Reeves was also a very wonderful and caring person. When he meets Anna again all he remembers were the surface commotions she had always caused. As he gets to know her a bit better though he ends up understanding the underlying cause and this starts to put her past actions into a new light for him. The little girl was adorable and I loved how Anna totally understood her and was able to relate as well as gently show Reeves how to be the father he had always tried to be but had been coming up short as. The Aunts were such lovable characters as well and you could even understand how Anna's grandmother went overboard in the other direction (this is understandable once you read the book) while trying to raise Anna. She was really a bit clueless even though she was trying to do her best for Anna and I felt a bit sorry for her.

Anna understands and by reaching out to the child, ends up reaching the heart of Reeves. Both main characters learn to examine their hearts, so that their past hurts won't prevent their current happiness. The story examines all the ways that people try to express love, concluding that the gentle approach often works best.
Another good book about healing broken hearts is Stars Shine After Dark. The original paperback is available here, but a newly revised and expanded version is now available [...]

  • Sometimes God's lessons are not immediately understood by us. But as our faith in Him grows and we learn to trust Him, we can then see clearly. Anna and Reeves resisted God's path for them initially. But as their love and faith in God grew, so did their understanding of what He wanted for their lives. Struggles were the means to a triumphant ending.
