Taylor Caldwell has chosen the grand, the splendid means to tell of St. Luke

Taylor Caldwell has chosen the grand, the splendid means to tell of St. Luke. A somewhat old-fashioned although beautifully written book. This novel tells the story of St. Luke, called herein Lucanus, from childhood, adoption by a kindly Roman patrician as the latter's son.

At the end a lantern, feeble and yellow, swung on a hook, and beyond it was another passage, running at right angles. Here was a deep and heavy silence, broken only by the thin tinkle of the water. After he could control his nausea Lucanus looked about him and thought. It seemed that he had been waiting a considerable time for Plotius. Never in his life before had he been suspicious or wary. He reflected that his life had been too sheltered, too restricted, too scholarly, bounded by home, family, and studies.

  • Years ago I read books written by Taylor Caldwell. She was one of my favorite authors. One of her books I read was Dear and Glorious Physician. For personal reasons l wanted to read it again at this time. In the first chapter you are pulled into the life of the middle class Roman in ancient times. Caldwell describes the turbulent times of her characters with clarity.
Her main character, Lucanus, searches for a solution to life's trials and tribulations through a God he both loves and hates. He blames God for all the pain and poverty around him,but at the same time he believes in God as the creator of life. When Lucanus finally comes to terms with his love for the Lord, he begins to write his gospel for the Bible.
Because this book is historical fiction much of it is supposition, but the basic facts are true. It is a book that Christian readers would enjoy. It is a book that people searching for more meaning to their life might like to read.

  • After taking on the 50-day challenge to read the Gospel According to Luke during Lent 2018 and the Acts of the Apostles during Eastertide—both of which biblical scholars agree (well, they agree for the most part) were written by St. Luke—I thought that reading this account of Luke's life by the inimitable Taylor Caldwell would be enlightening. And I was so right!

Grounded in decades of research by Caldwell, this novel about the life of Luke—or Lucanus as he was called—begins when he is 10 years old and living in his birthplace of Antioch in ancient Syria and continues through his education as a physician at the renowned University of Alexandria and his discovery of the Christian faith.

Luke never met Jesus, but he wrote his Gospel by playing journalist, interviewing many people who had eyewitness experiences and encounters with Our Lord. The author's vivid and detailed descriptions of these events, while they are sometimes achingly laborious and drawn out, do add much color so the stories just pop off the page. How much is actually true about what Luke did and said I do not know, but it's a good story!

At times, the book is absolutely spellbinding and even riveting, but it can occasionally become tedious and dull. Still, it's worth your time to read it. Enlightening and engrossing!

  • "Physician" is a fictional account of St. Luke's life that can be somewhat slow moving and, of course, how the book ends is already known. However, the descriptions of life in the ancient world are fascinating and based on the author's extensive research. The most surprising aspect of the novel was the concerns of Roman citizens regarding the fall of their Republic and its descent into a ruthless, amoral empire. Their comments eerily parallel what is happening in the USA today.

  • This is a great book and well written on the story of Luke. It takes place during the Roman Empire times during the life of Christ. Obviously the crucifixion is somewhat violent and while there is some romance I really could not call it "some sexual content" . All in all it was very difficult to put the book down. I probably read the entire book in less than 3 days. I plan to read again later this summer.
    Highly recommend.

  • Taylor Caldwell Is one of my all time favorite authors and this book is her very best in my opinion. (This is my fourth purchase since I keep sharing it with other "Historical Novel" lovers like me!)
The book arrived in record time in excellent condition and I started reading right away. It's one-off those "hard to put down" books. Excellent read!

  • ...what an amazing writer was Taylor Caldwell. I read many of her books in the 60s and 70s, so enough time has passed so that they are fresh and new to me. This book was amazing, moving, and beautiful. The author is in no rush, and takes the time to give the reader a wondrous sense of time and place. Remember those epic movies of the 70s, such as Ben Hur, Dr. Zhivago, and others? This book has the same textures and richness. Highly recommended.

  • Taylor Caldwell had a remarkable ability to write historical fiction. Many of her ideas came from vivid visions and dreams. While quite verbose, Caldwell writes a fascinating narrative on the life of Luke the Physician, and author of the Gospel Luke. While obviously a work of fiction, Caldwell incorporates what little is known about Luke, and writes a detailed drama on how he came to pen his gospel. The story is extremely engrossing. Yes, it's long and detailed, but it is well worth the journey.

  • Saint Luke is the author of the Gospel of Luke. While he never met Jesus, Taylor Caldwell tells us in detail about the life of Christ from the Star of Bethlehem to Christ's resurrection. This is a truly insightful work because it is an accurate detail of Scripture. The many insightful disclosures of Luke's personal life are very educational. I recommend this book to all who are serious about the Bible and the Word of God. You will not be disappointed.
