  • If you're looking for a fair and balanced (albeit brief) take on the Gospels and their literary and critical analysis, this is not a bad place to start. It is perhaps a little dated at this point, but was a fascinating and broad look at the relevant scholarship on the issue.

  • Prior to, say, Vatican II, Catholic scholarship about the life of Jesus tended to be hopelessly conservative and "traditional." (E.g., Karl Adam's The Son of God, (Image book), or Henri Daniel-Rops' Jesus and His times.) The situation has completely changed since then; Raymond E. Brown (1928-1998) was a priest in good standing, yet he authored such pathbreaking critical studies as The Birth of the Messiah (Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library) and Death of the Messiah: From Gethsemane to the Grave (2 Vol. Boxed Set)).

In this 1967 book (which DID receive the "Nihil Obstat" and "Imprimatur"), he brought a welcome breath of fresh air to Catholic scholarship. If his thoughts and observations about the gospels and the life of Jesus no longer seem "radical," it is only because many of his ideas now seem "mainstream."
