Xavier Léon-Dufour (Paris, 7 March 1912–13 November 2007) was a French Jesuit biblical scholar and theologian. He was professor of the Bible at the centre Sèvres and director of collections at éditions du Seuil and éditions du Cerf.

Xavier Léon-Dufour (Paris, 7 March 1912–13 November 2007) was a French Jesuit biblical scholar and theologian. In the years 1948-1957 he was a lecturer of the Holy Bible in the Jesuit theological faculty of Enghien in Belgium. From there, he moved to Lyon-Fourvière.

If you're looking for a fair and balanced (albeit brief) take on the Gospels and their literary and critical analysis, this is not a bad place to start. It is perhaps a little dated at this point, but was a fascinating and broad look at the relevant scholarship on the issue.

Prior to, say, Vatican II, Catholic scholarship about the life of Jesus tended to be hopelessly conservative and "traditional." (E.g., Karl Adam's The Son of God, (Image book), or Henri Daniel-Rops' Jesus and His times.) The situation has completely changed since then; Raymond E. Brown (1928-1998) was a priest in good standing, yet he authored such pathbreaking critical studies as The Birth of the Messiah (Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library) and Death of the Messiah: From Gethsemane to the Grave (2 Vol. Boxed Set)).
