Sometimes it seems we just can't get what we want. Circumstances thwart our best-laid plans. We struggle to live a heartfelt life. Worst of all, says Eldredge, the modern church mistakenly teaches its people to kill desire (calling it sin) and replace it with duty or obligation (calling it sanctification). As a result, at best Christians tend to live safe, boring lives of resignation. At worst, their desire eventually breaks out in destructive ways such as substance abuse, affairs, and pornography addictions. In The Journey of Desire, Eldredge invites readers to rediscover God-given desire and to search again for the life they once dreamed of.

  • This is one of the best christian books I've read in my life. I already have the book in hardcover format but purchased for my Kindle because I wanted to be sure to have it if I wanted to re-read or quote it without having to carry the hardcopy around. Especially poignant are the chapters on heaven. Some of the most moving descriptions of what heaven might be. If you have never longed for heaven, this book will make you do it! Highly recomended!

  • I still haven't read any other book by John Eldredge except for this one. Maybe I'm biased against Sacred Romance and Wild at Heart...who knows. The Journey of Desire explores the rawness of pain and suffering in the midst of circumstances beyond one's control. In the case of Eldredge, his friend, colleague and writing partner on the Sacred Romance, Brent Curtis, died in a rock climbing incident. Eldredge uses this as a foundation to explore the core questions in life: who am I? where am I going? what do I want out of life? One of my favorite sub-threads to this book is his fable of the seal and the tortoise. It's a powerful illustration of just how insidious the enemy is in our time of need and woundedness; however, this only magnifies the greater, felt need for the Lord Himself. I recommend this book.

  • John Eldridge just lost his best friend Brent Curtis (whom he wrote the Sacred Romance with). They were going to write this book together. These two books, Sacred Romance and The journey of Desire, in my opinion are on a whole different/higher level than his popular books. Read both of them. Buy both of them. Sacred Romance especially touches twenty and thirty "somethings". They enabled me to grow in so many ways, it is hard to say which one is better. So if you are a deep thinking, like to dig, like to know yourself better, understand the longings of and walls around your heart? Don't read these two books, study them- with your Bibles.

  • This book helps clarify what your desires in life are and whether you should pursue them or keep running from them. Each chapter has an introduction short story about a sea lion that lives in the desert. Does your life sometimes feel out of place like the sea lion? He should live near the sea; but his circumstances have him in the desert. Can you change those circumstances and reveal your desires; or are the conventions of life more important? Great book.... could not put it down... real page-turner!

  • Other reviews have touched on overall main points, the part that meant the most to me was the conversation about heaven - the life we're created for! For the first time, heaven sounds cool!
Quoting from page 111 (ch.7): "Nearly every Christian I have spoken with has some idea that eternity is an unending church service... and without giving it much thought we have settled on an image of the never-ending sing-along in the sky, one great hymn after another, forever and ever, amen. And our heart sinks. Forever and ever? That's it? That's the good news? And then we sigh and feel guilty that we are not more 'spiritual.'
Heaven is the restoration of Eden - paradise. No wonder we're frustrated by this life in between, it's a fallen world, our souls show scars to prove it.
Read the book, you'll see how this concept fits into the overall picture.
An aside about "all the quotes" that others found distracting - many of them are Scripture, so I don't recommend skimming them all... the other quotes he has chosen are references from music and literature, and are evidence to me that a counselor from Colorado Springs is not the only one thinking and writing on the pursuit for MEANING in life... believers and nonbelievers alike are thirsty for it. The author is pointing in the direction he believes the well to be, I have a hunch he's right...

  • St. Augustine once said of God, "We are meant for thee, and our hearts are ever restless until they meet their rest in thee." John Elderdge has done an astonishingly good book on finding the true desire of the heart, that elusive call of "Joy" which C.S. Lewis so ably spoke about.

From the opening words of his parable of the Sea Lion, which is worth the entire book, he guides the reader through that desire which is in the hearts of those who belong to Christ, and directs them to the One for whom that desire points.

As Elderdge points out, the problem most Christians have is not that their desires are too strong, but they are too weak. We mess around with things that don't amount to a hill of beans, while infinite joy is offered us.

It is well worth reading, and an eye-opener. It should awaken even the most lethargic soul.

  • This book is one of the best spiritual books I have read. God our creator, our beginning, our middle, and our end, is clarified in the practical easy to read writing style of John Eldredge. Not only is he a gifted writer, but he takes the complex issues of the human heart and explains so clearly why we as humans cannot be satisfied. He beautifully weaves together stories and scripture to show how we are all innately in search of meaning for our lives. This book will give hope to anyone in search of a better way to live life here in this world. Highly recommended for anyone in search of answers for why we are here.

  • Excellent stuff; this is about how a man a wife can get along; especially in the bedroom; Also alludes to how a man and woman who are rightfully married (in holy matrimony) can work out issues and find solutions (sometimes with prayer & fasting).
