With Charles Higham, Katharine Hepburn first authorized a writer to interview her closest friends and colleagues about her career, life, and behind-the-scenes romantic involvements from Leland Hayward to Spencer Tracy. And she herself tells the deeply moving story of her twenty-five-year love affair with Tracy. Here is a vivid portrait of the most elegant, independent, and tempestuous star to grace the screen. Over a half million copies sold.

Thoroughly revised and updated, this vivid biography surveys the life and career of the eminent American film and stage actress, highlighting important episodes and relationships in her life and outstanding productions and performances. 15,000 first printing.

Higham's superficial chronology is filled out with quips and quotes from Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, George Cukor, Howard Hawks, Jed Harris, who describe her by turns as stagestruck or luminous, clumsy or graceful, thoroughbred or mannered, a beauty or a crow. Her romances included Leland Hayward, Howard Hughes and, of course, Spencer Tracy. Apparently, Kate is touchy about writer-director Garson Kanin's indiscreet 1972 Tracy and Hepburn, so Higham plays down the affair.

Katharine Houghton Hepburn (May 12, 1907 – June 29, 2003) was an American actress known for her fierce independence and spirited personality, who was a leading lady in Hollywood for more than 60 years. She appeared in a range of genres, from screwball comedy to literary drama, and she received a record (for any gender) four Academy Awards for Lead Acting Performances, plus eight further nominations.

  • Forget all the shallow criticisms about this book. "Kate" is the best book out on Hepburn.

  • This is a wonderful biography for anyone who want to know everything about Kate. This book focuses a lot on her career and the people she met along the way. After reading this book, I had no idea what kind of a person she was, she was definitely not your average movie star who adored the glamour of Hollywood but a fiesty red-headed women who was charismatic towards whatever she did. A must for any Katharine Hepburn fan or classic movie star fan.

  • In his appearance on The Dick Cavett Show, George Cukor said that this book contained many inaccuracies and was very upsetting to Katharine Hepburn.

  • I expected to read an interesting story regarding this woman who graced the stage and screen as a dynamic actress over numerous years. However, this novel was indeed boring to me. It had no excitement in it as far as I am concerned and believe me I am an avid reader. I was definitely hoping for more and it did not DELIVER at all for me.
