  • Almost obsessively thorough in its backgrounding. A reference resource more than a conventional 'read.' It is amazing how much archival information lay unseen for so many years. Even in the case of someone as obsessively observed and commented upon as Bix.

  • Not very good graphically, but very informative about Bix and his milieu

  • Mr. Johnson's book on Bix is a labor of love. He spent a good percent of his life doing the research for this book. In it he has collected just about everything that is possible about the life of Bix Beiderbecke when he lived in Davenport, IA. Although the presentation of the material is a bit chaotic, much like Bix's life, it is all there. If there is anything to criticize it would be that the material does require that you have an idea of the chronology of Bix's activities before the book is usable for research. It is valuable when used with " Bix, The Leon Bix Beiderbecke story" by Philip and Linda Evans.

  • This much-anticipated book is finally available, and a delightful volume it is, chock-full of photographs, reminisces, and information on Bix & his family and friends. Readers learn all about the background and influences which formed this musical genius, and we get distinct view of what it was like to grow up in a small midwestern city in the early 1900's, everything from what people did for entertainment to the anti-German-American bigotry of WWI -- and some of its painful results. Much loving care went into this work, and this is a book to go back to again and again, to learn about Bix, to enjoy the wonderful affect he has had on listeners for over 80 years, and to "live Bix", for, after all, Bix Lives!

  • As Bix's great niece, I would like to recommend this book to all Bix fans.

In this wonderfully researched biography (by the late Rich Johnson and his side-kick, Gerri Bowers) there are many 'flashes' of new information about Bix. Thankfully, the authors have only included information that can be documented. There is no myth repeating here, only tirelessly researched documentation.

It is a 'must read' to anyone interested in the life of Bix Beiderbecke.

Just when I thought that there couldn't be anything new published after reading so much information on Bix, along comes this treasure.

Not only are there hundreds of pages of fresh, new text, but there is also an abundance of previously unpublished photos and images.

I would like to give a big thank you to Gerri Bowers and the late Rich Johnson for giving us this tremendous gift.

    It is a landmark biography.

This is a priceless addition to my 'Bix library'.

    Bix Lives!

  • This is a must-have book for anyone interested in the life and music of Bix Beiderbecke, one of the most important jazz stylists from the classic era (1920s-1930s). The late Rich Johnson, Davenport resident, Bix enthusiast and himself a jazz musician, has - along with his team of dedicated researchers - unearthed a massive amount of information about Bix's hometown, his family and friends, and the musical and social environment in which Bix grew up: in short, the many influences that contributed towards the emergence of one of the true geniuses of jazz. Profusely illustrated and with many personal reminiscences from people who knew Bix, it's an engrossing read as well as a first-rate reference work for jazz scholars. Heartily recommended, and a snip at 35 dollars for a massive 700 pages!
