Along the ancient Silk Road where Europe, Asia, and Russia converge. Feb 11, 2018 Sam rated it it was amazing. This book emerged from conversations with Alexandra Carvelius, who was responsible for the text. In this form it has the shortcomings of lack of additional supporting evidence. It relies on the moral force Kadeer's narrative to make the case about the suffering of the Uighur people.

Kadeer held various positions in China's parliament and other political institutions before being arrested in 1999 for, according to Chinese state media, sending confidential internal reference reports to her husband, who worked in the United States as a pro-East Turkistan independence broadcaster. After she fled to the United States in 2005 on compassionate release, Kadeer assumed leadership positions in overseas Uyghur organizations such as the World Uyghur Congress. W. Norton & Company, Inc. Rebiya Kadeer’s ‘Dragon Fighter’: Life as a Voice for China’s Uighur Minority. Rebiya Kadeer’s memoir paints a vivid picture of her path to becoming the most prominent dissident among the Uighur people of western China. Dragon Fighter: One Woman's Epic Struggle for Peace With China.

"Extremely important" (Wall Street Journal) and "thrilling" (Washington Post).

Along the ancient Silk Road where Europe, Asia, and Russia converge stands the four-thousand-year-old homeland of a peaceful people, the Uyghurs. Their culture is filled with music, dance, family, and love of tradition passed down by storytelling through the ages.

For millennia, they have survived clashes in the shadow of China, Russia, and Central Asia. Rebiya Kadeer’s courage, intellect, morality, and sacrifice give hope to the nearly eleven million Uyghurs worldwide on whose behalf she speaks as an indomitable world leader for the freedom of her people and the sovereignty of her nation.

  • Such a sad story for such a lovely ethnicity. Rebiya's story is, unfortunately, the story of many Uyghurs living under the brutal, culture-crushing Chinese fist. Of course, her story is different in that she became rich. The majority of Uyghurs don't get that chance and Rebiya probably couldn't do it today under the "Strike Hard" policies of the PPC. Recommended reading for anyone interested in China, Chinese minorities, Central Asia and ethnic cleansing, both of the population and its culture.

  • This is one of the most important books of our time. Ms. Kadeer is a hero of all people, not just of the Uighur people. Her story of hardship under the heels of the Chinese government is important especially when many people seem to think China is a modern country. This story tells how ruthless the leadership is in their effort to keep control of East Turkestan (Xinjiang) which they colonized. Please read this and keep the efforts of the oppressed people in China (including Uighurs and Tibetans) in the eye of the public.

  • Trying an interesting public figure especially for those who are interested in human rights, Islamic diversity, Central Asia, and China. I also recommend the movie called '10 Conditions of Love' which was produced in Australia, shown in Taiwan, but banned in China, of course.

  • A few years ago I taught a lovely young Eurasian woman with delicate features, high cheekbones and almond shaped eyes who spoke five languages and had grown up in China. I did a little research after a fellow student identified her as an Uighur ( a group I had never heard of),and was amazed that her highly developed culture should be so unknown in the West. Later she told us some of the stories I have now read in this book, about betrayal, murder, infanticide, and what we now call "cultural genocide" as it is practiced today in China against the Uighur people.

This story could so easily be unbelievable fiction. It has rags-to-riches, David and Goliath, the power of the individual, love and betrayal, speaking truth to power, true feminism, survival, and so much more. But, as far as I know, it is true.

I liked the blend of the personal and the historical in the narrative. I would have liked more details about daily life in the family, but this is the story of a woman who sees her purpose as one of helping her people survive. I hope this book aids in achieving the goal. May her words give hope to the Uighurs, and influence those with the power to create positive change in the situation.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves biography, geography, motivational speakers, or just to learn about other cultures.

  • This memoire takes the reader on a fascinating trip through a woman's event filled life revealing the courage of the people of her family and her unique experiences in a remote region of China. The writer,Rebiya Kadeer, takes her place in the telling of the history of the Uyghura and Tibetan people and their struggle with the Chinese agression against them. Her story is beautifully written and her character is revealed as one of dignity and intelligence. Dragon Fighter is a true historical memoire which helps the rest of the world understand the Tibetan and Uyghura experiences. A new genre?

  • I love this book so much. I recommend it to everyone.

  • Rebiya Kadeer is a born leader; courageous, strong, honest, full of faith and persistant. I find myself looking through the news for updates on Uyghur people.

  • SHE IS AMAZING ! If you want to learn China's cruel face, you will read it and it will shake you up...
She is such an amazing woman who is one of the bravest women in the World !
