When someone dies a preventable death, there is no obligation for loved ones to become activists, aiming to stop similar deaths. It is enough to merely grieve for a tragic loss. Aiken was making dinner for her family on December 5, 1977 when she noticed a headline in the local Schenectady, New York newspaper. When Doris Aiken published her autobiography in 2002, she called it My Life As A Pit Bull.

This book is Doris Aiken’s candidly revealed story of her confrontations with lawyers, politicians, the media and the alcohol industry in her struggle to reform DWI laws. She recounts these adventures with humor and yet the lessons for citizen activists lie clearly therein. In 1978 Doris Aiken had a vision to alleviate drunk driving. Her battle to change our nation’s views and policies is a must read book for parents concerned about binge drinking or the risk of motorists on the road. What to do about it and how to do it is told in this blow by blow tale

Life was dull and monotonous When I first saw him, I didn’t really know or care that he was a pit bull. He had a funny mouth and a funnier disposition.

Life was dull and monotonous. I had a fancy job on The Hill and was in charge of a significant amount of Congressional money. Congressmen regularly dropped into my office and I traded tips on designer purse flash sales over coffee with lobbyists. But I neither liked nor particularly wanted any of it. I made an honest attempt at convincing friends and family that I was living my dream. This is what I’ve always wanted, I repeated. The truth was my days were long and dreary. When I first saw him, I didn’t really know or care that he was a pit bull.

Pit bull on drunken driving has made a difference. Thirty years ago, drunken driving was seen as a joke. Today it is seen as the serious, life-and-death matter that it is, by most drivers as well as the legal system. Aiken became committed to this cause after two Scotia teenagers were hit by a drunken driver in December 1977. A few months later, she launched RID-USA with a meeting at the Unitarian Church on Wendell Avenue.

Like the pit bull itself, this book is sturdy, complicated and resists easy categorizatio. s Dickey exhaustively demonstrates, there is no ‘aggression gene’ and no such thing as a dangerous breed. So was the lovable mascot Pete the Pup in the immensely popular Our Gang movies in the 1930s. How had this symbol of friendliness and reliability become so feared that people fled when she walked her dog on the street? This beautifully assembled tale of how the pit bull was transformed into a demon perfectly captures a disquieting strain of hysteria in our national life. It's the rare dog story that tells us as much about people as about dogs.

Shocking video shows the moment frum Jewish man Moshe Lefkovits saves a baby boy and his older sister from being attacked by a crazed pit bull. The dog locked its jaws on the hood of the baby's coat and tried to wrangle the infant out of his sister's arms in Spring Valley, New York on Tuesday. Video footage from a car shows the moment Lefkovits runs to kick the dog.

My Life As a Book is a middle grade novel by Janet Tashjian, illustrated by her teenage son, Jake Tashjian series. It is published by many companies. It is used in many schools as well as several citywide reads.
