If Hillary Clinton won the Democratic Party nomination in 2008, it would continue a trend of a Bush or a Clinton being on a national presidential ticket for the last 28 years in the United States. Never before in the history of the nation have two families dominated the political process in such a manner. This two-family domination has endangered the American presidency as a representative institution and has allowed personal, family issues to dominate policymaking at a crucial time in American history. The problems with the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2008 and the current struggles of the second Bush presidency should give pause to those Americans who are contemplating a second Clinton presidency or a third Bush presidency. By examining the political careers of three Bushes (George H.W., George W. and Jeb) and two Clintons (Bill and Hillary), this book will highlight the problems and the consequences of combining the most powerful political office in the world with family legacies.

  • really enjoyed reading it. this is a great book. I need it for class but I totally love it. plus one of my professors wrote it.

  • The book is thoroughly researched and documented and was a very relevant and timely subject until Jeb Bush's dismal showing in his 2016 bid for the Presidency. Pundits had anticipated a Hillary Clinton vs Jeb Bush Presidential contest in 2016, but Republican voters rejected all Establishment candidates with the pending exception of possibly Ted Cruz, who has now taken up the Establishment banner. The pundits, including Corrigan, were proven wrong - the American electorate rejected dynasty in 2016, at least partially.
Corrigan's book is no expose on the Bushes and Clintons. There is no scandal or salacious content in this book. The book avoids sharp biting polemics and controversy and is rather conservative and staid in its presentation. Straight forward, the book addresses the practicalities and realities confronted by royal dynastic governance.
The American Revolution had deviated from the status quo of the past in which hereditary monarchy guided human governance. These family dynasties had been ruinous to Europe's subject national populations and it had been hoped that emergent republican forms of government would end this long-standing human institution. But with the ascendance of the Bush and Clinton families and their respective influence on the rise of the imperial presidency with its growing concentration of power in the executive branch, it looked like history was ready to revert to its old natural form of royal governance, at least in America. The George W. Bush administration ruled much like a European monarchy - instituting policies benefiting only the nobility and threatening to drive the nation into insolvency due to its policies of tax cuts to the super rich, preemptive wars, and crony capitalism on steroids ( EX:Halliburton contracts in Iraq), which ran up federal deficits to astronomical levels and increased the national debt by trillions. Jeb Bush was expected to continue his brother's policies and no doubt would have had working class Republican whites not rejected him in favor of Donald Trump. The Roosevelts and Kennedys had prematurely signaled an earlier reemergence of royal dynasty, but the two clans withered on the vine. The Bushes looked geared to succeed in reviving the old institution in 2016 until Jeb Bush miserably failed as a candidate. This leaves only the Clinton family, under the personage of Hillary Clinton, to vie for dynastic family power with its tendency to concentrate more power in the executive.
