Book y published in 1898, Thomas Jefferson is a classic biography of the man who so deeply ingrained the republican ideals of the Founding Fathers into American society. As such, it is the kind of work that avoids the trap of noticingeverything that went unnoticed in the past while failing to notice all that the past deemed notable. Immediately lauded by the critics when it was first published, John T. Morse?s biography of Jefferson was embraced by the reading public.

  • The writing style is old, and some of the comments are antisemitic. The history was interesting.

  • Thomas Jefferson harped on peace and limited government. He despised anything resembling a monarchy or social system. He had bitter foes. All sides made reasonable arguments, even if vehement in approach. Jefferson's writing ability and inclusive wisdom fueled his rise to the top. He disliked war and was an enemy of public debt. He lacked enough conviction for anyone to understand, truly, where he stood on religion and slavery. Reading this book, written a hundred years ago about a founding father that died a hundred years earlier, I could help but say to myself, "things never change." Public figures are subjected to bottomless scrutiny. Some findings are founded, some unfounded. Knowing the truth is near impossible. I choose to appreciate the factual good things Thomas Jefferson did. I recommend this book as a good supplement to classic history.

  • It is always so very rewarding to read about the life and the character of men who made a difference in the world. I brought the curiosity of child, who takes something apart to see what made it tick. I too wanted to know what are the characteristics that make a man several heads taller than the rest of his fellowmen. I was not disappointed.

  • Great historical book on the American presidency. If you like this book you will also want to read the following books on the presidency:
    1. Thirty-six Years in the White House (1902)
    2. Inside History of the White House: The Complete History of the Domestic and Official Life in Washington of the Nation's Presidents and Their Families (1908)
    3. Memories of the White House: The Home Life of Our Presidents from Lincoln to Roosevelt (1911)
    4. The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln: Six Months at the White House (1867)
    5. The Creation of the Presidency, 1775-1789: A Study in Constitutional History (1922)
    6. Presidential Problems (1904)
    7. Thomas Jefferson (1891)
    8. The Ladies of the White House: Martha Washington (1882)
    9. The Presidency, Its Duties, Its Powers, Its Opportunities and Its Limitations (1916)
    10. Complete Life of William McKinley and Story of His Assassination: An Authentic and Official Memorial Edition, Containing Every Incident in the Career of the Immortal Statesmen (1901)

  • This book presents the facts of Jefferson's life. It was written in the 1880's so the writing style takes a bit to get used to. It does gloss over some aspects of his personal life. But, if you want to learn about Jefferson and his era, this is one of the books you must read.

  • Not a gripping read and seems to focus on a select few areas of his life and completely exclude others, including some of his important relationships.

  • Very detailed and informative. However his language was of a 19th century writer so had to think and re-read certain sections.

  • The book contains a very detailed and presumably true review of Thomas Jefferson, but is not written in an interesting way. David McCullough would have done much better.
