The only authorized, authentic book about the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club by founding member, Sonny Barger—featuring a brand new introduction

Narrated by the visionary founding member, Hell's Angel provides a fascinating all-access pass to the secret world of the notorious Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club. Sonny Barger recounts the birth of the original Oakland Hell's Angels and the four turbulent decades that followed. Hell's Angel also chronicles the way the HAMC revolutionized the look of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle and built what has become a worldwide bike-riding fraternity, a beacon for freedom-seekers the world over.

Dozens of photos, including many from private collections and from noted photographers, provide visual documentation to this extraordinary tale. Never simply a story about motorcycles, colorful characters, and high-speed thrills, Hell's Angel is the ultimate outlaw's tale of loyalty and betrayal, subcultures and brotherhood, and the real price of freedom.

  • Well written. I enjoyed how Mr. Barger was able to pull events back to true reality vs other writer/authors (undercover ops now making a living from embellished writings). Thank you for a realistic accounting of history.

  • I choose this book for curious reasons. grew up around bikers and wanted to learn more about the club. it sounds like everthing I knew or heard growing up. book was an easy read maybe a bit long, as most of the hook is ahout riding and partying. not sure I would recommend this book unless you have adeep

  • If you love 81 and the big Red Machine like I do, then this is REQUIRED reading! Sonny Barger is beyond a simple American Legend, he is what American Legends are made from. I can't really describe how great this book is, you just have to read it for yourself.

  • I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. It may have been all the references to things I remember growing up. It is well written and interesting coming from the perspective of an insider. I found the honesty refreshing. It's written like this is how it was no bulls***. Do I think there was a lot left unsaid definitely so much so that I'm going to read more of his books.

  • I started reading this book 4 days ago. I had to force myself to put it down to get some sleep. This book opened my eyes to the club. I knew the club was started by Veterens that wanted the brotherhood as well as buddies to ride with but, the club is much more. The one thing this book really did was make me want to ride my bike that much more. To ride with a group of guys with the same outlook on life as I have would be great. To all who should read this, don't believe everything the media has said about the HAMC over the years. Sonny lays it out, to the best of his knowledge everything that happened from the early days to the present (well when the book was writen). I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

  • I read this book in less than a day. Suffice to say that I liked it. You don’t have to agree with Sonny Barger’s deeds and lifestyle to have an interest in what made Sonny and the Hell’s Angels what they were or are.
Those who have reviewed this book, and seemed unable to gain any such insights, probably expect all of life’s lessons to be easy to understand and clearly written in two syllable words.
I’ve read many Biographies and Autobiographies and most have revealed a “Something Special” about those books notable subjects. Without question Sonny has something that makes people follow him.
I’m not a “Biker” and was never enough of a “follower” to be interested in that sort of membership, but I had the opportunity to see Sunny Barger at the NH Biker Week event at Weir’s Beach. Though now in his sixties and not able to speak well (at least in a crowd) due to the residual effects of throat cancer surgery, Sunny is still clearly revered by Biker Club Members and Aficionado’s alike!
Some of what Sunny has stood for I despise, and some of what he has stood for I greatly admire. In any event, Sunny has significance in American history and I found the book interesting in that regard.

  • Sonny Barger makes it very clear in the opening introduction that he is not about to apologise for any of the things he has done during his time as a Hells Angel, nor is he about to sugar coat any of his stories, and he lives up to this promise! From riding his Harley absolutely wrecked out of his brain, to the kidnapping, torture and disbandment of rival club members after they foolishly stole, chopped up and threw one of his beloved hand built bikes into a river, you get it all in raw detail.
While it's mostly a chronological writing from Sonny's childhood through to present day, I did feel it lacked substance in some areas, hence the 4 stars. Although I don't think you would be too surprised at the holes due to Sonny's own self-confessed extensive use of drugs and alcohol over the years.
If you want to read about the gory details from the inside of one of the earliest biker gangs in the US, written by the man who was probably one of the most influential people in the system, then this is the book to get. The part where the Hells Angels were hired as security for the infamous Rolling Stones concert is particularly interesting, and oh isn't hindsight a beautiful thing.
If you are after something more along the lines of a study into biker culture I would highly recommend "The Brotherhoods: Inside the Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs" by Arthur Veno who has made the study of biker gangs his passion for the last 30 years. It is mostly about Australian biker gangs, but you will get the idea. In fact, I highly recommend reading the two books one after another, just as I did.

  • It's a great book. Simple, easy to read and understand. Those who were waiting for secrets and internal stuff from the club seem disapointed but to all these SOA wannabes, remember that unless you're a member, club business is none of your business. Therefore, not everything has to be told in the book. I enjoyed this book for the story through the 60's, 70's, 80's and all the crazy stuff that happened during these years. Long to ride forever free!
