The novel, L'Amant, by Marguerite Duras written in the 50's was translated into English. The Lover, and became the basis for the movie The Lover starring Tony Leung. A great movie which stimulated me to read the book in English which then stimulated me to read the original. The English version is a literal translation of the French and possesses the flow and passion of the original. The movie is one of the best renditions of a book I have seen

Original French language edition of "L'amant."
  • I read this book in English and in French. It’s absolutely spell binding in both- the voice, the cadenza of the narrative, the subtle emotional switching between the first person and the third, the story itself, the ghostly presence of the lover, the so called « absence of love » screaming Love all over the book. All enveloped in unspeakable sadness, which filled me to the brim with nostalgia and longing for those unknown places and time. A unique book, of a unique évanescent segment de temps et de sentiment. Reading it it’s a must.

  • I put "predictable" since I had watched the movie, but the book is quite similar to the plot the script was developed. Both the movie and the book are rather sad, nostalgic, but I like that. Duras describes very detailed the plot on the book, and on the movie I reckon the strove to get the best grasp of what is written on the book. I simply loved it

  • The novel, L'Amant, by Marguerite Duras written in the 50's was translated into English. The Lover, and became the basis for the movie The Lover starring Tony Leung. A great movie which stimulated me to read the book in English which then stimulated me to read the original. The English version is a literal translation of the French and possesses the flow and passion of the original. The movie is one of the best renditions of a book I have seen. In Netflix, the movie gets mixed reviews ranging from brilliant to those who get emotionally upset by the theme of the movie, which is an older (32 year old) Chinese man who has an affair with a very mature 15 year old French girl in Vietnam. But who is seducing or using who? Beautifully written (the books) and directed (movie).

  • Extremely satisfied! Thank you.

  • A classic. Besides the original writing style for which Duras is known, the reader is introduced to, or reminded of, the situation of the French colony Indochina narrated from the perspective of a young French woman born and grew up there till the age of 17. The style is at once pithy and evocative.

  • Extraordinary prose, fascinating book about love, an enchanted dream. Everyone will follow this journey along asian sceneries and landscapes. Deep emotions.

  • Super fast delivery , great quality, beautiful tragic story. It's a great book for those learning/practicing French

  • French baby!
