Carole and the Journeys of David Toback. The final finished version was published by Schocken Press as The Journeys of David Toback in 1981. David Toback was Carole’s maternal grandfather. As the books were translated, Carole began to know the grandfather that she had only seen a few times as a child. But Carole found that the completed translation needed additional work.

Adding descriptive touches, making fabric where there was only thread, Carole Malkin took the five handwritten notebooks of her s memories and fashioned a picaresque out of them. Born in 1875, David lived in little Shumsk until a rebbe's letter recommending the boy's holiness and receptivity to learning Torah sent him, at 14, on the road to the yeshiva in Kishinev. Forty years later, his notebooks were rediscovered by his granddaughter Carole Malkin, who wrote the Journeys of David Toback. This collaboration across decades and generations has given us a fascinating saga of restless wandering and growing self-consciousness, a life story that reads like the most skillful fiction.
Carole completed two more novels and has now self-published them. Both are striking and trenchant coming-of-age narratives. The novel is about the transformation and redemption of a Berkeley juvenile delinquent who is sent to an Israeli Yeshiva to be rehabilitated. Karl’s story-he later adopts the name of Baruch-is intertwined with that of his hippy mother, Lisa, a supporter of drug experimentation and promiscuous sex.
