  • I was disappointed with this book, as while it seemed to be well-researched, it is impossible to capture the spirit of the time or the personalities so many years later. It also happens that my interest in the book relates to personal knowledge of several of the atheletes involved. I think that the author was not fair to Ernie Cobb or several of the other players, but he was overly sympathetic to Jim Sweeney. I believed then, as I do now, that it really was Sweeney's show. Nevertheless, the players and their motivations get a lot of play in the book, but you can never really know what happened as you cannot see into the human heart, especially 20 years later. I believe that the real point to be made is that under the wrong circumstances, anyone can be had and the resulting tragedy can have lifelong consequences. The book does capture this important aspect of the whole case which makes it worth the read.

  • Without buttressing its merit with Mafia hype or superfluous detail, Fixed seamlessly weaves together the distressing tales of a real-life cast of characters guided by greed. Porter obviously researched his subject thoroughly, and his unbiased presentation of facts and ability to anticipate and clarify potential questions and inconsistencies compelled this reader to eagerly turn the pages without questioning the credibility of this remarkably captivating account. I highly recommend it.

  • The characters in this book--gangsters, degenerate gamblers, the Feds, greedy athletes--are so unbelievable that at times that you forget that they are real and that the story is TRUE! The fix is in and (author) Porter does a great job of telling the story from beginning to end. Made me wonder how many college games I've watched over the years when the final score was something other than what it should have been. Any way, this is a good story well researched and well written. The book is an excellent gift for any hoops fan or fan of true crime.

  • Porter's agenda to clear Jim Sweeney's name and to cast more doubt over Ernie Cobb's name is disgraceful. Sweeney fixed games. Period. He admitted to that by accepting a plea bargain from his "buddy" Ed McDonald. Cobb, who would have been a very good NBA player was acquited of all charges, yet Porter wants you to believe that Cobb was guilty. This book insults any true Basketball fan's knowledge of the game. Kuhn wasn't good enough to dictate outcome, Cobb was acquited of all charges, leaving Sweeney the Point Guard as the obvious link on the court. I'm surprised Porter's never been sued for this inaccurate hatchet job.

  • I thought the book was excellent. My boyfriend knows the guys from Swissvale so he rather enjoyed it also. It was great reading for him, especially the parts about Swissvale. A super book and I can't wait for the movie.

  • Hard to believe these kids who had no intention of shaving points were roped into doing so by one player who had no integrity and no real love of the game or appreciation for Boston College that offered him a valuable education instead of his punk friends from Pittsburgh....even harder for them to imagine that he would get them involved in the low life killers from the mob in NYC. Proves the adage that if you associate with losers they will pull you down, but if you associate yourself with good people they will pull you up.

  • How could great athletes at an outstanding school throw away their dignity for a few bucks? Read this book and find out. These Boston College basketball players were way better than being involved with "Goodfella" Henry Hill and his underworld associates. They made a mistake and we all mess up but its too bad they tossed away a great college basketball experience.
