Its central aim is to explain the way in which the UK authorities analyse mone-tary developments and implement monetary policy in the mid 1980s. The background to the introduction of monetary targets in the UK is discussed briefly in Chapter 1. The second chapter follows on with a discussion of the development of policy since the introduction of announced quantitative targets for monetary aggregates: in particular, the development of the Medium Term Financial Strategy is examined.
